Neil Smith’s The Production of Nature from Uneven Development: Nature, Capital and the Production of Space (1987) draws on the work of Karl Marx to explore how the structure of capitalism has affected society’s relationship with the natural world as factor of production. Smith argues that our conceptions about nature as being separate from society are what enable us to exploit it.
