One of the most memorable moments of World War II (WWII) is, without a doubt, the Holocaust. People tend to talk about the millions of lives that were lost but many fail to mention the people who helped defeat the Nazis. “Like a number of other celebrities, Audrey Hepburn helped fight against the Axis Powers during WWII,” (1). Audrey Hepburn was best known for her starring roles in the movies Sabrina, Funny Face, Breakfast at Tiffany's, My Fair Lady, and Roman Holiday. Not many people are aware of the fact that Hepburn contributed to the Resistance and helped fight against the German Nazis and the Axis Powers. In 1940, Audrey Hepburn was living in Holland with her mother, her two brothers, and other relatives; her father lived in London. Her parents were divorced. Hepburn had been attending a boarding school in England, but, in September of 1939, Poland was invaded by Hitler. Her father sent her off to Holland at her mother’s request. Holland had intended on staying neutral in the war and was considered a safe place for hiding out. But one night as Audrey laid her head on her pillow, Holland was invaded by Germany. 1,000 Dutch civilians were killed and 85,000 were left homeless. …show more content…
In 1941, her mother Ella sent her to the Arnhem Conservatory to study dance. Hepburn then knew that she wanted to pursue her dream of becoming a ballerina. Being a child of war, Audrey learned to cope with her hunger, fear, and deprivation through the art of music and dance. Soon enough, she and some other dancers began hosting secret dance shows to raise money for the Dutch Resistance. Their recitals were held in houses with closed doors and windows. No one outside was aware of what was happening inside. After their performance was completed, money was collected and turned over to the Dutch Resistance.
