Audre Lorde's The Transformation Of Silence Into Language

I have listened to dreadful stories of my lady friends who have been through their toughest moments and are not able to speak because of them. Not only is it just them, but it is seen everywhere around social media. From girls posting a random picture on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook with a caption trying to speak for themselves, but no attention is going towards it. Most people just will scroll past it and just see it as a personal problem, but I know those people are dying to be heard. Most people will tell you silence is providential or silence is key. Well not quite. Silence is the ocean of the unsaid, the unutterable, the tyrannized, the erased, the unheard. Audre Lorde, in the article, “The Transformation of Silence into Language and …show more content…
but do not include whites, well same thing with the word gender. In each exposition the dominant group is left out and does not get paid attention to. We are unexamined due to the power society gives us. Therefore, with the power that is emphasized on us we can stand up for women too because we can say some things that women cannot say at all or we can be heard saying things, that women cannot often be heard. It is time for a change. We need to start standing with women not against them. We live in a world together so might as well work …show more content…
Everyone could help in any way to at least make a change. For example, a guy says something sexest, humiliating or degrading something about a women; instead of pretending like you did not hear it or laughing about it you can say that it was inappropriate topic and they should not be doing that. We owe our respect to women because they have been through it all, we see all over the media that they are being victimized by others especially men. Many afraid to speak from it, many speak until years after, when there is nothing they can do about it. Think about your loved ones and they people you care about. What if they are or can be in the shoes of someone who cannot speak, I am pretty sure you will stand up for them, so stand up for all

With the recent #metoo movement empowering women from all over to come out and share their stories of how they have been disrespected and treated so horribly and the Women’s March this past weekend I began thinking about feminism again. To be specific, feminism and men. These past few of years have been awesome ones for women and awesome for feminism. It is unfortunate that it requires such negative situations to finally allow women to be heard, but at least they are finally being heard loud and clear. With all this women empowerment though I believe some forget that not all men are the same, that not all of us are disgraces like those who caused the #metoo movement.…

When we think of someone being silent there are many reasons for that and sometimes we think the worst of it; we may think that they are ignoring us, they are mad at us or just plain rude. This is a very American concept as in other countries silence is common and normal, but we don’t look at it as a defense mechanism to continue surviving. This is shown by looking specifically at countries within Africa that were affected by the Atlantic and Indian Ocean slave trades. You would think they would be out and open about their experiences and how it has left their countries, however, you see the opposite, these things are not spoken about out in public. In some instances, such as in Ghana, it was illegal to discuss slave origins, in Madagascar…

The feminist movement is a prevalent force across the nation and is fighting for equal rights for women. One of the main attributes to women not being treated the same as a man is the societal roles that are still in place for both. The only way to move away from gender inequality is to try and stop every instance of it from occurring and to not let it prevail in society. Donald Trump’s rhetoric used to objectify and defame women is the means for the perpetuation of gender inequality in the United States. It is understandable to assume that not every instance of gender discrimination or racial discrimination can be ceased in present society.…

A woman was unable to vote, be in the military, work in the factories, or perform any tasks that weren’t considerably easy. Once a man learns about historic times, he subconsciously displays this power in his daily life. In the same sense, women feel they are at a disadvantage from the start or like they need to prove they are equal. Children grow up with the sense that a man is big and strong and a woman is delicate and weak. For true equality to ever happen, substantial change in society needs to be made.…

Keynote speaker, Clint Smith speaks on the “Dangers of Silence” through the reflection of his own failures to tell the basic, everyday truth. When we hear the word danger, we typically think straight of the actions committed by others that are grave and deadly. Mr. Smith, a writer, and teacher brought an entirely new meaning to the meaning of silence. Clint states that the pure act of silence being recognized as serene causes more danger than any good. He teaches the audience that when we are dealing with controversial issues that demand action from the public, we divert ourselves to keep hushed and automatically become muted in order to avoid the issue at hand.…
