Auditory Processing Disorder is a part of Central Auditory Disorders (CAPD). APD is a problem understanding spoken language in the absence of hearing loss, individuals will have an abnormally functioning central auditory pathway. Individuals with APD have difficulty understanding speech in the present of normal hearing. Central Auditory Processing (CAP) is how efficient and effective your central nervous system utilizes auditory information, and the neurobiological activity that underlies that processing. It is responsible for our functions with memory, attention, and language. (Bellis, 2010). Disorders in this area can be a part of two categories: they can be a part of a distinct part of the brain and caused by a tumor or stroke, or more generalized …show more content…
Many of the symptoms can be common in other learning disabilities such as not being able to understand the teacher in a noisy classroom, following directions, and being able to tell the difference between similar sounding speech sounds. Many children will act as if they do have a hearing loss and will ask for repetition of words in class, have difficultly spelling, reading and understanding verbal cues from their teacher. Yet, children with APD will perform better in areas that do not rely on listening, and they can compete a task without help once they know and understand the directions. For example, a child with ADHD will show signs and symptoms of not being able to listen and difficulty comprehending language but these are not due to APD but rather a more global disorder. As well as children with autism, they have difficulties with comprehension of spoken language, but it is not the result of an auditory processing disorder rather the deficits of the autism itself. We would state that child has a specialized disorder rather than diagnose the child with a central auditory processing disorder. “What makes APD different is that the problem lies with understanding the sounds of spoken language, not the meaning of what’s being said”. These treatments must be specific to the deficits that the child has, and it is very likely that a treatment that was used for certain children will not work for all children. The goal for treatment with children diagnosed with APD is the ability to communicate more efficiently in everyday life. Treatment plans should be conveyed to the team of parents, teachers and anyone who is there to help support the child. “Treatment of APD generally focuses on three primary areas: changing the learning or communication environment, recruiting higher-order skills to help compensate for the disorder, and remediation of the auditory deficit itself.” (ASHA, 2015) Some therapeutic approaches to help with areas in need would be: Modify the classroom to try and reduce background noise such as air vents, street traffic, playground, hallways. The use of an assistive listening device such as a sound field amplification system, or FM auditory trainer. Allow the child to sit as close to a speaker as possible or use a tape recording device. Children who do present with ADHD are more challenging for treatment than others, they will be less likely to cooperate during assessments, and difficulty understanding the instructions given.
