For this assignment the two careers I chose were audiology and physical therapy. I chose audiology and physical therapy to research because these are two very interesting occupations to me. They also are very active with helping people, and that is the main thing I want to do in my life is help people, so these careers would help me do that very effectively.
Audiology is where assess patients to diagnose specific hearing disabilities, its causes, and the steps needed to remedy the problem. Audiologists may prescribe certain hearing aids or refer patients to physicians for possible surgery. The education requirements for audiologists is a master’s degree to obtain an actual license. Physical therapists evaluate patients need by referring to doctor’s instructions and examining the patient’s physical abilities and present limitations from their injury to work to get them back to how they were before their injury or accident. They also treat patients to build up injured muscles or body parts. They administer massages, give whirlpool baths, and manipulate joints to reduce pain, as well as give heat and ultrasound treatments and assign patients to exercise equipment. All states require physical therapists to pass a licensing exam after graduating from an accredited PT program with a bachelor’s or master’s degree. A master’s degree is required for researching and teaching positions. Employment in physical therapy is predicted to grow at least 14% higher in the next 10 years. Physical therapists earn between $60,000 and $87,000 per year. A UCO major that would help me prepare for this career would be athletic training (Focus 2 Portfolio). As well as audiology, physical therapists help people every day. They also have to listen to people every day to know their limitations and concerns and I am a good listener. These are a couple ways that this career fits my interests and skills.
