In this assignment, I will develop and conduct a qualitative audience reception analysis investigating the methods of interviewing and participant observation. I conducted an open-ended interview exploring individual meaning making practices related to consuming Twitter. Through the open-ended interview with my friend Greg Wagner, I attempted to gain information about how he understands and makes meaning out of a particular media platform. The focus of my research and interview questions was to explore the unique way Greg uses and understands Twitter and what enjoyment he gets from the platform. Having been friends with Greg prior to the interview, I had an awareness of his social media usage and had been curious …show more content…
I will do research by conducting a one-on-one interview with a friend. The interview will be open-ended, as that structure of interview allows for gathering more subjective information on the individual. I will approach the interview with a pre-determined set of questions but will change and create questions depending on the responses I hear from the person. The individual I will focus on in my research is Greg, a close friend. The interview will take place in a casual and comforting environment because I want to approach Greg in an environment that is familiar. I told Greg about what the interview will entail, a summary of the research and the types of questions I planned on asking. I also made sure to ask permission to confidentially use his responses in my research. Greg was able to tell me all I wanted to know about his Twitter usage. However, I wish I would have been able to ask Greg more about his accounts on other social media platforms, his thoughts on TV programs using live tweeting and his opinion on Twitter 's new Livestream. Another takeaway from my interview is that I learned that Greg holds a dominant audience position in regards to Twitter’s platform. When asked, Greg offered no alternative change to the format and structure of Twitter. From the interview, I know that Greg prefers Twitter because of its simple and to the point format. Greg stated that Twitter 's 140 character limit prevents the long and excessive posts found on Facebook, which he despises. In regards to Twitter content, I found that Greg enjoys the information and opinion-sharing found on Twitter. In the interview, Greg admitted to appreciating the content created by the political pundits and strategists he follows. While some of the people Greg follows on Twitter do not hold the same beliefs as he does, he enjoys their writing style, appreciates their opinions and takes pleasure in modifying what they have to say to fit his own beliefs and ideas. Additionally, Greg likes to tweet back at and create content. In regards to this past election, specifically the Presidential Debates, Greg admitted to creating and sharing content in regards to what he saw occurring on TV. According to
