Audience Argument

Audience Analysis For my ceremonial speech, I am giving a high school graduation speech. I chose this because I have interesting stories to go along with it that would connect with the audience on a more personal level. At the beginning of my speech, I give a story about a member of the class that went through a lot battling cancer until he died the summer before senior year. According to past speeches involving cancer, everyone has known someone that has been affected by cancer. I am not using this as a way to connect to my audience, but it is something that is unfortunately useful in my speech. Additionally, my speech involves inspirational words. At this point in our lives, us college students could really use some inspiration to get us

The 117th Founder’s Day Convocation can best be described as motivational. I was inspired by the speaker’s message which articulated that we should not defer our dreams. She said, “If we have a dream, we have a vision.” She challenged us to be like the founding fathers and see our visions to the end. She stressed the importance of not giving up even when things get tough.…

Looking back on history, there have been a surplus of events where a multitude of people have been affected. A few examples of these events being the Holocaust, the 9/11 attacks, etc. When these events do indeed occur, it is very common for the people who endured these tragedies refuse to recount their experiences due to the traumatization it caused them. However, there are times where one person will recount their experiences of these events, and in turn will give others the confidence they need in order to also speak out about what had happened to them.…

A messy bedroom, Arctic Monkeys as background music, and an adolescent begrudgingly writing an essay for their twelfth grade English class is the current scene. This is the perspective of a senior; an absolutely glamorous time in life. It's an alarming thought that my high school career has brought me to this point as I search my mind for the correct words to advise you and my fingers tap away at my small keyboard. I'm supposed to give advice and guidance to the future graduates of our beloved Quincy High School, but there's little I can give that can be completely relatable to all. For example, I was raised by a single father, am a part-time cashier, and can barely figure out how the Pythagorean theorem will actually affect my adult life.…

In Washington, I lobbied for legislation that would impact cancer patients on many different levels. The first was for an increase in NIH funding, the second was for approval of the PCHETA bill, a bill that would help extend palliative care in patients, and a bill to close a gap in medicare policies that left many elderly Americans paying out of pocket for colonoscopies. My team was comprised of seven individuals, including myself, all fighting together to support the passage of these bills. When meeting with our legislators, we brought many personal stories in an effort to humanize the bills we were talking about; to make the legislation personal, about sick individuals, not just “them”. We needed to humanize the people we were fighting for to help persuade our elected officials to support these three bills.…

Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech.
