Audience and Occasion:

The occasion for my ceremonial speech is a celebratory dinner in honor of my older brother, Michael Tradewell, who has just graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School. I am going to be giving a congratulate speech on his remarkable accomplishments, thanking him for always being the most amazing brother, and let him know that he will be an outstanding doctor. The audience will be our family, immediate and extended, and also some close friends who have known Michael for a long time.

Shortly after graduating we were all pleased with the news that you would be attending Medical School, which had been a goal of Michael’s since freshman year of college, and we were all even more excited because your journey was going to continue at the University of Minnesota just a little bit longer! Although medical school was an intense and often stressful period within your career, you managed to never give up and find the beauty in hard work because you knew you could change people’s lives for the better. Michael, we are all here today to celebrate you, and all of your amazing accomplishments. You kindness and passion to help others is as large as life, and I am lucky to have such an incredible brother who I have watched only continue being an extraordinary human, and now doctor. You were there for me when I feel off my bike and had no problem washing my cut and bandaging it for me, and I know you will have no problem helping others who are hurt or sick. I can’t wait for the rest of your journey as a doctor, and continue to watch you do the most remarkable things in this world. Congratulations Dr.

Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

Attending a school that emphasizes diversity like the University of California, Los Angeles allowed me to interact with dissimilar people and immerse myself in many cultures different from my own. Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. An example of our discoveries during research was results showing that minorities, especially African Americans, are less likely to pursue living…
