Q: Why did Auchincloss say it is wrong to claim that Columbus discovered the Western hemisphere?
A: Auchincloss says it is wrong to claim that Columbus discovered the Western hemisphere because in the article he explains that the word “discover” suggests that someone went and found a strange and unknown place or object. Unfortunately for Columbus, various parts of the Western hemisphere were already discovered by others many years before his arrival. Such “discoverers” include settlers that originated from Asia, Irish monk Saint Brendan, Prince Madoc of Wales, and Leif Eriksson and the Norsemen. Therefore, Columbus did not officially discover the Western hemisphere first.
