Attitudes In Aldermore

Decent Essays
Within Aldermore, our codes of conduct were expressed to us at the start of our journey of work. We are required to take responsibility for our actions and make sure that everything is clear from the outset of contacting people with our name being put and linked to everything we say and everything we do within our systems. To be politically correct and to have an office manor of politeness is expected of us whilst we are in work. I am always well-spoken whilst on the phones or sending emails to customers as I feel the attitude I give out is what represents us as a bank. Attitudes in Aldermore are taken seriously, behaviour is key. Honestly is definitely something that is looked highly upon in Aldermore as it would for all other lenders. To

“Incident” by Countee Cullen, “Ballad of Birmingham” by Dudley Randall, and the film, The Help, demonstrate the dangers of prejudice and the struggle for acceptance by African Americans during the civil rights movement. The background, overall plot, and most importantly, the interactions of the characters play an important role in the demonstration of this theme. This theme connects to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a holiday celebrating the efforts of Martin Luther King Jr. during the fight for civil rights. While prejudice still exists in America today, it occurs to a much lesser extent partly due to the legacy of King and his passion for equality. Prejudice, an unwarranted and opposing viewpoint towards a person stemming from that individual’s…

These behaviors can be seen in the nurses to the left that are sitting together and working as a team in order to discuss what is occurring in their workplace. Along with these communication strategies there are other phrases that can be said that redirect the conversation from being uncivil to being more respectful. For instance if a nurse were to being to yell at a coworker and say that they did something wrong, it would be important to go into another room and discuss what was done. Also by saying a phrase such as, “I did not know that I had made an error, is there any way we can address this issue together to find a solution,” opens up a discussion that includes both people and allows for a…

The film Pleasantville depicts an idyllic 1950's community that experiences profound challenges to its unquestioned, taken-for-granted social norms. The movie works well in an introductory sociology class as an allegory about a settled or stable society that undergoes rapid social change following a major disruption in the worldview and widespread norm breaching. Specifically, the film depicts challenges related to the use of language, modes of communication, family formation, sexual norms, social deviance, art, and media. I recommend using the film in its entirety to demonstrate how in-groups resist change, while out-groups often challenge norms and produce positive (or negative) adaptations to society. One could also use segments of the film to demonstrate concepts like alienation,…

Stereotype, a word that conjures up a myriad of feelings and images in ones brain. It allows people to place others into boxes, categorizing them for future reference. However, the danger here is that stereotypes do not make room for the expansion upon said boxes. Michael Pickering, a professor of media and cultural analysis at Loughborough University in the UK, expands upon this idea of stereotypes and their inflexibility in his book Stereotyping: The Politics of Representation published in 2001 by Palgrave Macmillan.…

Dominant attitudes in a society are revealed by the conflict between characters and people in texts. Both Skeeter and Hilly from the 2011 blockbuster, The Help, effectively construct the dominant attitudes held by the American Society in the early 1960’s with regards to the treatment and rights of African Americans in a currently white endorsed culture. The liberal push for increased Negro rights is accomplished by Skeeters challenge on the dominant attitudes, which are represented by Hilly and endorse attitudes for a White supremist society which is widely accepted in the American culture during the setting of the film. Through the careful construction of this film by Tate Taylor, the director, the audience is positioned to sympathise with the Skeeters representation of the African American population, and reject or challenge the dominant attitudes presented by Hillys portrayal of the Negro community.…
