Her level of English is very high, as she had taken part in several community college English classes for foreigners. She starts the interview by expressing that even though she has to work 3 part time jobs, she wouldn’t change anything in her life because her kids are her strength. As previously mentioned she works 3 different jobs; cashier at a convenience store, delivery driver for a pizza restaurant and as a waitress for a coffee shop. Maria clearly states that the benefits of being a mother surpass the disadvantages of having to work most of the time. She affirms that her kids have become very independent in a good sense. She relies on her oldest child to help with her youngest. Maria’s oldest child is in charge of preparing dinner after getting from school with her sibling. This, according to Maria, has made her daughter a very mature and well-rounded individual due to the fact that she had to become a motherly figure for the youngest sibling. About the topic of the impact of working mothers in the life of their young kids, a study by Rachel Lucas-Thompson, Wendy Goldberg and JoAnn Prause from the University of California Irvine showed that, the young children of working mothers were more likely to be high achievers in school and have less depression and anxiety, specially those from low-income and/or single-parent families. …show more content…
Matlin’s book “The Psychology of Women” do in fact relate closely to the experiences that the interviewed mother has had to face in her life. Many mothers, just like Maria are in the difficult position to put aside dreams and plans to face the hardships of being mothers and full-time employees. Countless are the cases of mothers that are doing everything by themselves due to the fact that they are single parents. Nonetheless, it is important to denote that like any other situation and/or experience in life, each and every single person can and will experience different
