Atticus Relationship In To Kill A Mockingbird

Superior Essays
In To Kill A Mockingbird many of the characters have multiple sides to them. It is exactly like when you are with a group of friends, or if you are with a group of family members. Your attitude usually changes; it is just like in this book. Atticus has two sides to him. One side of Atticus is mysterious, and he only tells you about half of his life and the other half he leads you down a path of guessing. Atticus is mysterious, because in chapter ten there is this crazy dog that happens to be walking down the street, and Atticus kills it. “ Mr. Finch! She shouted. This is Cal I swear to God there’s a mad dog down the street a piece- he’s comin’ this way” (Lee 123). Atticus came into town and BAM with one shot the dog was gone. I find this …show more content…
I think she has two sides to her because she is rude to Jem and Scout about Atticus or the way they were raised, but only when they were alone. One main reason I think Mrs. D is a rude person is because she judges Jem and Scout. Mrs. Dubose said, “What are you doing in those overalls? You should be in a dress and camisole, young lady! You’ll grow up waiting on tables if someone don’t change your ways” (Lee 135). By her saying that she is disregarding Atticus ways of raising his children. Mrs. Dubos is also a very careful woman. From the text “ Don’t you lie to me” (Lee 135) it just seems like she over powering Jem and Scout by being the old mean neighbor. I’m connecting this to careful because she is careful to push. She pushes Jem out of his comfort zone by saying disrespectful things about Atticus. Where Mrs. Dubose knows Atticus will keep his head up high, but saying the mean things to his kids she knows they will crack before Atticus does. Mrs. Dubose is not only careful by what message she is sending to the kids with her attitude, but also she is carful about how she talks around Jem and …show more content…
People have multiple sides because we all act different in different situations.I will be characterizing Atticus from how he acts in chapters 10-15. Jem and Scout think Atticus is boring, because he is too old to be tackled. “ Atticus was never to tired to play keep away, but when Jem wanted to tackle him Atticus would say I’m too old for that son” (Lee 118). When Atticus says he’s “too old” he dose not want to hurt him self because he is older for the time period. Jem and Scout also thin he’s boring because when Atticus is not doing lawyer work he is reading. As a fifty year old man who has been working most of his life I could understand reading in your free time, but if all someone does after they get home from work and eat all they do is read I would agree that they are boring too. Atticus is also boring because he cannot do fun activities because he is nearly blind in one eye. “He never went hunting did not play poker or fish or drink or smoke.” Atticus did not do most of these activities, because he had two kids at home, and he is a lawyer so most of his day is spent studying trials for upcoming cases. Atticus is also courageous; because he did not, not take the Tom Robinson case. If I were in the shoes of Atticus I would not have taken the case because it is a case that he knows will

One importing quote in the story that helps this thought is at the end of the trial, even though he lost the blacks in the back of the court stand up to respect him for what he did. Another prominent about Atticus is his big play in the father figure for Jem & Scout. This may sound insignificant as a hero thing However, with Jem & Scout not having mother/mother figure( excluding Cal)this can put a strain on both kids but Atticus is very responsible in taking care of the kids. One quote is when Atticus rushes home to save the town and kids from the mad dog which must have looked cool in Jem and scouts eyes.…

And for all of his treatment of Jem and Scout, he recognizes that they are still children and will act like children. He has Scout and her brother call him Atticus instead of Father to make it seem like they are peers. Atticus believes in what is right, even if it is not what is popular. He is faced with a very stressful case in which he has to defend an African-American man accused of raping a white girl. He knows this man is innocent and defends him because of it, not because he's black.…

Atticus expects his children to stand up for what they believe in, and he does the same himself. He does not feel that he can tell them one thing and do another. Finally, Atticus is always guiding Jem and Scout with advice so that they will become more compassionate people. Atticus sets a good example for the children when Mr. Ewell confronts him. Even though he is provoked and insulted, Atticus simply has a “peaceful reaction”.…

Besides being the sassiest, most disrespectful mutts who ever passesher way, we were told that it was quite a pity that our father had not remarried after our mother’s death. A lovelier lady than my mother never lived, she said, and it was heartbreaking the way that Atticus Finch let her kids run wild. I did not remember our mother, but Jem did- he would tell me about her sometimes and went livid when Mrs. Dubose shot us this message”. This quote proves that Mrs. Dubose is a mean and evil lady.…

In the introductory chapters of Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch comes across as an astute and senile lawyer in his mid fifties with an adoration of literature and a slightly elusive scholarly attitude. Through Chapter 10, this characterization of him undergoes a noticeable transformation as the story progresses and he starts being seen less as mundane and unaccomplished and more as a hero. At the beginning of the novel Atticus’s actions and the physical descriptions the reader receives of him portray him to be elderly and feeble, however by the close of the chapter he comes across as quick-witted and sharp. In addition to this recent illustration, Atticus also ends up becoming heroic in the minds of his fellow townspeople,…

Atticus was a whole different person before “‘. . . Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time’” (Lee 112). When Miss Maudie tells Scout and Jem that Atticus used to be the best shot, neither of them could believe it. Their father, probably the most level headed and humble person they ever met had hidden part of his past “Nevertheless, he refuses to use his background as an excuse to hold himself above others and instead is a model of tolerance and understanding” (“To Kill a Mockingbird”).…

Opening Doors of Sickness Sickness plagues our world, whether someone is ailing, mentally ill, or morally disgusting. It is one of the more miserable aspects of being human, and we’ve all had to experience it. In Maycomb, a fictional town that serves as the setting and as a character in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, “closed doors meant sickness and cold weather only.” (Harper Lee, pg 11) This is so that the ill person could be in hiding from the rest of Maycomb.…

You can’t hold her responsible for what she says and does” (105). This shows that Atticus knows Mrs. Dubose has been rude with his family, but instead, he understands that she acts without thinking since she’s old. Atticus doesn’t get angry at her, as some other person would.…

Atticus, in contrast to many other characters in the novel, does not accept the institutionalized racism that is entrenched into Maycombian society. Instead, he fights racial prejudice because he views it as fundamentally flawed and stemming from a lack of empathy and understanding for those outside one’s social group. Furthermore, Atticus’ emotional investment in Tom Robinson’s case shows the personal level on which racism affects him. When discussing with Scout why he was defending Tom Robinson, Atticus explained, “… every lawyer gets a case at least once in his life that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess.”…

This shows that Jem and Mrs. Dubose have extremely different views on Atticus from each other. Dubose as an evil, cranky, old lady until they are able to spend time with her and learn her secrets. The children thought Mrs. Dubose was incredibly rude, and they did not want to walk past her house because they “would be raked by her wrathful gaze, subjected to ruthless interrogation regarding our behavior, and given a melancholy prediction on what we would amount to when we grew up, which was always nothing” (Lee 132). Mrs. Dubose judged the children, made rude remarks, and seemed completely heartless. She often insulted Scout for unlady like behavior, and she insulted Atticus, Scout and Jem’s father, for defending and supporting African Americans. It was not until Atticus forced Scout and Jem to read to Mrs. Dubose every day that the children learned Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict who was trying to get clean before she died.…
