After Tom robinson was accused of attacking a white girl. He was forced to defend himself in court, but as a black negro it is hard to have any people listen to high in a pro white society / time period. However his lawyer Atticus uses both emotional and logical appeal to convince the jury of Tom Robinson’s innocence. He also has used multiply accounts of other persuasive techniques throughout the story.
The persuasive techniques used throughout the story include loaded language, Repetition and ethical appeal. Loaded language is seen multiple times throughout this court case. He uses both examples of good and bad connotation to show that his defendant was innocent. Examples of good connotation can be seen in words like “God, family, humble,

Examples of his emotional appeals are shown through when Atticus says “I have nothing but pity … but my pity does not extend so far as putting a man’s life at stake of which she has done in an effort to rid of her own guilt” as well as “And so, a quiet, humble, respectable negro, who has unmitigated temerity to feel sorry for a white woman has put his word against two white peoples.” His emotional appeal in the first quote is saying that Mayell is only doing it for herself. It is wrong to place a man into jail to hide a guilt that you yourself had done. The second quote is saying that a negro had to strength to come up and speak against 2 white people even though he knows it may make him a target of acts of racism against him but he still did so. He also uses logical appeal when he is talking about the evidence that says Robinson was innocent. He says that there is not one medical evidence that shows tom was guilty as well as the two witnesses that say Robinson is guilty come into serious question on cross examination of their evidence and that Robinson was right handed while the attacker being right handed. He used these pieces of evidence to show that Mayella was lying about the crime and the evidence they have cannot be trusted. Other evidence also shows that it couldn't have been Robinson and it was someone

Atticus continues to point out that the evidence shows that Mayella Ewell was beaten by someone’s left hand, whereas Tom Robinson is obviously right handed. Stating these true and logical facts at the beginning of his speech is important, because it shows the jury the loopholes in the case and plants seeds of doubt right from the start. It is easier to appeal to emotion when the audience already has doubts. Another example is, ‘’testimony of two witness whose evidence has not only been called into serious question on cross examination, but has been flatly contradicted by the defendent’’(L.15,16). Atticus is stating to the jury the hard facts, and the flaws of those, that are logically, clearly, not accurate.…

A point that the jury overlooks is that "the state has not produced one iota of medical evidence…that the crime…ever took place" (Lee 231). The jury cannot ignore the fact that the state does not present proper evidence that rightly convicts Tom of committing the crime, especially if they cannot prove that it happened in the first place in the eyes of doctors. The most trustworthy evidence of rape would be recorded evidence of physical proof, and without it, the prosecuting side's argument becomes apocryphal. Additionally, to no one's surprise, Atticus restates that "there is circumstantial evidence to indicate that Mayella Ewell was beaten savagely by someone…with his left [hand]" (Lee 232-233), yet Tom Robinson took an oath "with the only good hand he possesses-his right hand" (Lee 233). The repetition of these facts allows the jury to clearly see how the Ewells staged the crime against Tom's favor.…

“Simply because we were licked a hundred before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” (101) says Atticus Finch, the main character in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Atticus defends Tom Robinson, a black man, accused of attacking a white woman. Set in Jim Crow Alabama, Atticus is making a decision many people in Maycomb do not understand- taking a stand for a black man. Even though Atticus knows he does not have a chance at winning Tom’s case, because of his character, it makes sense for him to defend Tom Robinson because, Atticus does what is right, he lives by the “Golden Rule”, and he wants to set a good example to Jem and Scout.…

Can you imagine trying to defend a black man in the South during the 1930’s when racism was still extremely prevalent? Well that is exactly what Atticus Finch did in To Kill A Mockingbird. Tom Robinson was a black man accused of rape. Atticus, being a lawyer, took on the role of defending him. It was known that Tom had a mangled left arm and had no purpose in doing the accused crime, but in the end racism won, over and the court 's decision was guilty purely based on skin color.…

He proves that Bob Ewell was responsible for the crime. He gave it his best shot that he could but the jury was so caught up on Tom Robinson’s skin color. Atticus was not surprised by the conviction but was mad at how racism in Maycomb county can overrule the Justice System. In court he talks about how the jury would buy into the assumption that all blacks are evil and immoral. He then states that this assumption is false and that all men are created equal no matter what skin color.…

To begin with, when Tom felt bad for Mayella the whole courtroom was shocked. To explain this in more detail, when Tom says, ““Yes suh, I felt right sorry for her”” (264), and then Scout thinks, “Below us nobody liked Tom Robinsons answer” (264). This means that although Tom Robinson might have more money, works harder, and is more respected in the black society, he’s still black, and that’s below any white person, and since the society thinks you can’t pity anyone higher than you, they got offended. In fact, when the court session was over, the jury and the audience knew Tom wasn’t guilty, but voted that he was. To prove this statement, during Atticus’ final statement he says, ““This case is as simple as black and white.””…

Racism had made Robinson’s fate of dead inevitable. “Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed”. In the particular place and time, it was simply because Tom was black and Mayella was white. In the era of 1930s, the whites had overwhelming power over the blacks who were seldom protected by law. Although Atticus did a brilliant job to expose Bob Ewell and his daughter’s lies and convinced most people that Tom Robinson was closer to innocence than sin, and it took extra effort and time for the jury to make a verdict, the sentence was still guilty, due to the predominance of racist opinion at that time.…

Atticus represents a protective shield between society and those that are defenseless because he abides by this belief by standing up for what is right, even though he is alone, and he gives the Negro citizens hope for equality. His accepting and fair attitude also contributes to his confidence and perseverance to continue to defend Tom Robinson. When Scout tells Atticus she doesn’t want to go to school because of Miss Caroline’s behavior, he tells Scout that to truly understand a person, you have to step in their shoes and put yourself in their position. (30) This virtue of acceptance and working to understand others allows Atticus to be patient and calm when dealing with people and guides him to do the right thing when taking action to deal with the social injustices. Atticus follows this principle to understand people, such as Boo Radley and Mrs. Dubose, and avoid being prejudiced towards them like most Maycomb citizens; he…
