Atticus has many great qualities that show up in his parenting, making him a great parent. First and foremost, Atticus encourages his children to find their own paths in life. In a portion of the book, Atticus came home to Jem and Scout in the front yard, after a rare long day of snowfall in Alabama. He finds the snowman his kids have been working on and gives them tips to change their snowman so it does not look offensive towards their neighbor. After this Atticus said, “But from now on I’ll never worry about what’ll become of you, son, you’ll always have an idea.”(Lee,90) This gives the idea of great parenting because of all the support he gives his kids. Furthermore, Atticus cares about his kids a great deal. An example from the book, is when Dill, Jem and Scout decided to wander into Arthur Radley’s backyard. After shots rang out the kids tried to get away. During this Jem managed to get his pants suck in the fence. When Atticus asked about them, he lied about what happened. Later that night Jem explained, “Atticus ain’t ever whipped me since I can remember.” (Lee,75). From this quote it is understood that Atticus chooses not to use the method of violence to teach his kids. This represents a quality parent because, he is being an astonishing role model, and setting an extraordinary example, for his kids. He wants his kids to grow up and be good parents and has the best interest in his children. Even though Atticus has many good parenting skills, his best skill is he is able to find the value out of situations and find the lesson behind it to teach to his children. In the book, Jem gets into some trouble after cutting, his neighbor, Mrs.Dubose’s flowers. Because of this Atticus made Jem read to her for a month. After the month passes, Mrs.Dubose passed away. Atticus told Jem the truth about Mrs.Dobose’s life to try to have Jem understand the point
