Atticus Irresponsible Father

Improved Essays
The role that Atticus has as a father makes him very determined to take good decisions, however accepting the Tom Robinson case is a very irresponsible action because it exposes his family to insecurity. In the time period that the novel is narrated the abuse and disdain towards black people is so powerful and dominant that it leads to many aspects that are shown in the book. An example from the book could be when Mrs Dubose insulted Jem and Scout when they were walking by one saturday, she said, “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for niggers!" (Lee, 117). This shows how racist and impolite people were back then, as Mrs Dubose is being very crude and cheeky towards Jem and Scout. They have been affected in …show more content…
On the quote above we could see that Atticus was aware of what could happen and even though he knew it could be dangerous he took a very irresponsible risk making his family vulnerable to problems. In addition, Jem and Scout suffer from harassment not only from civilians of Maycomb but also from members of the family, like Francys when he insulted them, “... he’s turned out a nigger-lover we’ll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb again. He’s ruinin’ the family…” (Lee, 94) The quote explains how atrocious people from the town and even family were towards Jem and Scout. We can see in the quote that Francys is being very racist towards negroes and is insulting Atticus by the simple act that he is helping a black guy and is doing his job. What I can infer with actions like this is that the Finch family will start to suffer from a severe act of disrespect and atrocity for the imprecise decision that Atticus

Atticus Finch believed that every man should be treated fairly. He let people know his views by defending a black man, Tom Robinson, much to the dismay of the townspeople. He also taught his children to not have prejudices against black people. He tells them “As you grow older, you 'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don 't you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash (224). " The moral lessons Atticus teaches Scout contrasts with the culture of Maycomb where the white people continue to treat black people as less than themselves.…

Atticus sets a good example to Scout and Jem because he believes everyone is equal and; therefore, Tom Robinson is black, it doesn't mean he can't defend him. For example, Atticus tells Scout many times that if he didn't defend Tom Robinson he wouldn't tell Jem or Scout not to do something. He has to set a good example for his children and if he expects them to do something or follow certain values, then he must display them first. In the book Atticus says, "The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” This quote proves that whatever Scout or Jem believe in they have to stand up for it.…

In order to give Scout and Jem more accurate and modern views about society, Atticus starts by showing them how to use the tool of empathy in everyday life. Atticus understands the feelings that the people of Maycomb have about his position on race, but he’s still kind and gracious to them because he understands that they each have varying degrees of suffering in their own lives; “Atticus would sweep off his hat, wave gallantly to her and say, ‘Good evening Mrs. Dubose! You look like a picture this evening’”(Lee, 115). Atticus knows quite clearly the opinions that Ms. Dubose has about his profession and on Tom’s trial, but he still takes the time to greet and to compliment her. This is because he also knows about her struggle with morphine addiction, and after putting himself into her shoes, he realizes that her insults are…

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, conflict surrounding race is illustrated through the injustice of Tom Robinson’s trial. One example is shown when Atticus is explaining to Scout why he took the trial. Atticus clarifies, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us to not try to win” (76). He is referring to the days of slavery and how that is a foundation of racism. Atticus recognizes that a black man essentially has no chance against a white man in court due to the deep-rooted discrimination in Maycomb.…

”’(Lee 110) Atticus became a victim of racism. Because Atticus was defending a black man, his own family discriminated him, saying he tarnished their family name, the reason being that, although Atticus was not black, he was a social taboo. He associated himself with a black person which was a horrible thing to do during the time, because of racist and prejudice assumptions about black people. This is further evident when Jem and Mrs. Dubose had a conflict between them, as Scout describes ’Jem said softly “She [Mrs. Dubose] said you [Atticus] lawed for niggers and trash.”’…
