Although Atticus is a great man, he´s bound to have prejudice against him. Whether it be from his family, from other families, or from the very people he would call neighbors. Atticus is a very strong man. Atticus may have a whole bunch of people who are against him in various different ways, but he still stands proud.
The worst feeling in the world is to, not only have your friends against you, but your own family. Atticus´ family clearly has some prejudice against him, for example, Francis Hancock. The Ewells. Also, Atticus, himself, and the rest of the town aren’t a big fan of the Ewells either, but they’re there. Atticus had spoken of them like, “the Ewells had been the disgrace of Maycomb for three generations. None of them had done an honest day’s work in my recollection”(30). Therefore speaking they hadn’t really gotten anything without cheating and such. So when the case came around and Robert Ewell had heard that Atticus was going to be defending Tom Robinson, the Ewells instantly pointed out Atticus to be a bad man .Hence back in that time period there was a lot of racism and discrimination, defending a black man was preposterous. Then also during the trial Atticus had made a few comments to Robert and his daughter Mayella. The questions asked towards to Robert were like “can you read and write” and “would you write your name for us?”(176,177). Robert had thought the questions were quite odd and unreasonable, but once Atticus had pulled evidence that Ewell had beaten his daughter, Ewell was infuriated. Then same thing with Mayella. She had seen that Atticus had fooled her father and was frightened that Atticus would do the same to her. Though Atticus is disrespected by some of the people in Maycomb for defending a black man and also making Robert Ewell look like a fool in court, Atticus still stands
