Atticus Finch Persuasion

In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the love story between Atticus Finch and Tom Robinson is obvious. This is evidenced when Atticus is confronted by Scout about his reason for defending Robinson if it caused disapproval of him and their family from many, “...if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again”(Lee 76). Atticus Finch used ethos, pathos, logos, anaphoras, and rhetorical questions in his closing argument to make the jury think about their opinion based on the evidence. He uses these to persuade the jury to believe that Tom was in fact innocent. He appealed to the jury's sense of reason, logic, emotions, and the overall appeal of the speaker or writer himself. He makes the jury think about the facts, and think about the credibility of Bob and Mayella side of the story. Even though the facts show that Tom Robinson is innocent the jury still found him guilty.…

A foil character can sometimes contrast one character with another in order to highlight particular qualities of the main character. In the fictional novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Atticus Finch, as the main character, and Bob Ewell, the minor character, to showcase the kind nature of Atticus Finch. The author uses these two characters to illustrate the overall theme of the novel, which is “Successful parenting may sometimes be viewed in a different perspective depending on whose eyes it is seen through.” Atticus is the father of Scout and Jem Finch, and he has a very sapient and deferential way of parenting his children. On the other hand, Bob Ewell is a very unenlightened and lackadaisical man, who is the father of eight children,…

During the 1930's, segregation towards African Americans were prevalent in the South. The novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, illustrated the theme of taking a stand when Atticus Finch stood up for Tom Robinson during a court case in which Robinson was accused for raping Mayella Ewell, Bob Ewell's daughter. Atticus shouldn't have taken a stand in this situation because it put people who had relations with him (including himself) in danger and people's opinions about him changed for the worst. Firstly, it is not worth it for Atticus to take a stand because his family was put in danger.…

As time progressed and we learned more about colloquial language and little things I could change in my essays to further advance and improve my writing. Now, I feel even more confident about my writing and know that all of these little changes I can make in my writing create a better flow of ideas and a higher level of formality. I feel that throughout this semester I have been greatly challenged as a writer and have advanced the most that I ever have in writing within such a short period of time. Atticus Finch was a Mockingbird of his kind, as he continued to stand up for what he believed in, with dexterity. Atticus taught Jem and Scout lessons as a father should and answered any question with honesty. In the novel Lee illuminates Atticus’s class as she wrote, “...Miss Stephanie said Atticus didn’t bat an eye, just took out his handkerchief and wiped and stood there and let Mr. Ewell call him names wild horses could not bring her to repeat” (291). Lee added the line to form an indirect characterization about Atticus's class. Atticus was not willing to lower himself to Bob Ewell’s level, the best way to get back at Mr. Ewell was to say nothing at all.…

Atticus’s empathy toward Tom Robinson is a major cause of Maycomb County respecting one another by the end. When Atticus told Jem some advice about how killing a mockingbird is a sin, Scout was confused and asked Mrs. Maudie about it, who clarified to her, “‘Your father’s right,’ she said. ‘Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make us music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corn cribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird (119).’”…

To begin with, the way Atticus treats and cares for Scout and Jem is one of the various ways To Kill a Mockingbird is a love story. Atticus clearly loves his kids and it is obvious because he teaches him many things. If he didn't love them, he wouldn't tech them simple things, like reading, much less the more difficult things like how racism is wrong, and all people are the same. Atticus also shows compassion to his kids with gestures. The novel states, "As they passed under a streetlight, Atticus reached out and massaged Jem's hair, his one gesture of affection."…
