To Kill a Mockingbird is an influential book for many reasons. It shows the many chances the characters take to fulfill their role in Maycomb, Alabama. He knew exactly how to help and did exactly what he was told to do. His boss Link Deas stood up during trial and told the courtroom how good of a man Tom was and how hardworking he was. Tom was on trial for raping a gal. Mayella Ewell was the gal he supposedly raped and she was actually beat by her father. Tom was nothing but a great person and role model. Tom was represented from Atticus Finch who knew the truth when he took the case. The only thing Atticus could say to Jem and Scout was “ In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s word, the white always wins. They’re ugly but those are the facts of life” (Lee 295). The minute the whites and the colored filled the courtroom Atticus knew a colored word didn’t matter anymore. The jury judged the book by the cover before they even saw the cover.
