Atticus Finch once said, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you’ll go after birds shoot all of the blue jays you want if you can hit’em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 119). To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee shows many great life lessons through the characters and the events. This story was set back in the late 1930’s when there were many racial divides in the United States, but also, within Alabama. This was set in a racist Southern town called Maycomb, Alabama.
To Kill a Mockingbird is an influential book for many reasons. It shows the many chances the characters take to fulfill their role in Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus Finch is one of the main characters along with his family. He is one who doesn’t let others influence the way he acts and stays true within him and others. There is one thing that Atticus looks past. The one thing he looks passed are the “classes” of people. To Atticus having a “name” means nothing, he sees

He knew exactly how to help and did exactly what he was told to do. His boss Link Deas stood up during trial and told the courtroom how good of a man Tom was and how hardworking he was. Tom was on trial for raping a gal. Mayella Ewell was the gal he supposedly raped and she was actually beat by her father. Tom was nothing but a great person and role model. Tom was represented from Atticus Finch who knew the truth when he took the case. The only thing Atticus could say to Jem and Scout was “ In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s word, the white always wins. They’re ugly but those are the facts of life” (Lee 295). The minute the whites and the colored filled the courtroom Atticus knew a colored word didn’t matter anymore. The jury judged the book by the cover before they even saw the cover. The jury didn’t take the next step in looking into Tom Robinson and who he really was as a person, they based him off of what he looked

He believes in justice, and he does not discriminate within the system, even if the defendant is a colored man. When asked by his daughter Scout, “If you shouldn’t be defendin’ him, then why are you doin’ it?” (p.100) Atticus said that he would not be able to represent the county in the legislature, and he could never tell his children what to do again.…

Atticus was a whole different person before “‘. . . Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time’” (Lee 112). When Miss Maudie tells Scout and Jem that Atticus used to be the best shot, neither of them could believe it. Their father, probably the most level headed and humble person they ever met had hidden part of his past “Nevertheless, he refuses to use his background as an excuse to hold himself above others and instead is a model of tolerance and understanding” (“To Kill a Mockingbird”).…

He uses the stereotype that black people are the majority of criminals and are the most dangerous people in the county. Due to Tom Robinson’s race, it made it difficult for the case to lean towards Tom. Before the trial begins, when Atticus is talking to Scout’s uncle Jack, Atticus says, “It couldn’t be worse Jack. The only thing we’ve got is a black man’s word against the Ewells’… The jury couldn’t possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson’s word against the Ewells’,” (Lee, pp. 116-117).…

During the trial Tom stayed calm and listened quietly to what everyone was saying. Tom is a respectable person that does not want to harm or hurt others. Tom took all the wrongful accusations without lashing out at people and acting like the monster people make him out to be. Furthermore, another way Tom is innocent is that he can not show that he is innocent in front of an all white court. Since black are lower in the social pyramid, Tom can not show that he is a kind hearted person.…

Atticus perseveres through his problems and acts upon his role in society, to do what is right. He explains to Scout that “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win…” (76) Atticus is a remarkable man because he defends Tom Robinson in the case even though he knows that in society at the time, when it’s a black man’s word against a white man’s, the white man always wins. He represents a light in a time of darkness because even when most people neglect to defend what is morally correct, he fights for the Negro citizens and tolerates the insults and shame he continually faces. When Scout talks about a book that Atticus read to her, she tells him about a misunderstood character who “was real nice” and didn’t do anything wrong even if people thought he did and Atticus tell her that “Most people are…when you finally see them.” (281) Atticus refers to Boo Radley because while he knew about Boo and respected him staying in the house all the time, most people assumed the worst and let their ignorance interfere with the truth.…
