Racism is a very important factor in To Kill a Mockingbird and immensely impacts Atticus Finch. Atticus takes this racial battle onto his own shoulders and is determined to make headway for equality. Atticus is very influential in this book and American Literature because he is a very caring and understanding lawyer, father, and individual. Atticus is a very fair and understanding lawyer who is well loved. He is observant and feels that everyone, even african americans deserve a trial. “‘Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win”’ (101). In the town of Maycomb Alabama, Atticus Finch is well known to help other residents and to lead by example. In the fire at Miss Maudie’s house, Atticus knew that her most valued possession was her oak rocking chair so he went in to save it. He also realized that Mrs. Dubose was going to die so he offered for Jem and Scout to read to her to break the addiction to morphine. He did this even though she treated the Finch family awfully because it was his civic duty. As an individual, Atticus has many morale battles which mentally and physically drain him. Atticus probably didn’t want to take Tom’s case but it was what he stood for. “‘I couldn’t go to church and worship God if I didn’t try to help that man’” (139). “‘If I didn’t I couldn’t hold my head up in this town, I couldn’t represent his country in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again’” (100). Atticus faced these moral problems head on and stuck to his values even though it was tough. This determination and strength of values is another reason that Atticus stands out in American Literature.
