A foil character can sometimes contrast one character with another in order to highlight particular qualities of the main character. In the fictional novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Atticus Finch, as the main character, and Bob Ewell, the minor character, to showcase the kind nature of Atticus Finch.
