Atticus Finch Character

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view […] until you climb into his skin and walk around in it,” (39) was one of the quotes made famous by Atticus Finch in Harper Lee’s inspiring novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. This novel encourages appreciation of the differences between people, as the characters change before the reader’s eyes and mature to be something and someone great. Throughout the novel, Atticus cultivates respect for people through his kindness and compassion towards his children and his community, despite his tendency to underestimate people, he continues to exhibit exemplary behavior. Atticus Finch effortlessly and instinctively proves himself to be a respectable gentleman. Atticus not only lives his life trying to mimic a good and decent person for his children to look up to, but also tries his hardest to teach them what good morals look like and how to have them. Atticus was the one person in the entire town of Maycomb who could hit a desired target with just one shot, but his children did not know this. When the mad dog came around and Atticus was asked to reveal this achievement to his children, the children wanted to know why he kept it from them. He is a character shaped and molded to not only be influential on the characters in the book, but to the readers of the beautifully written novel, To Kill A Mockingbird as well. He truly encouraged others to become better, but accepted them in their failures. He took others opinions into consideration and redefined the meaning of the quote “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view […] until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (39). In my opinion, we need more people like Atticus Finch in this world
