Atticus takes a stand “Simply because we’re licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 101). In Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the main characters, Atticus Finch, is given a case to defend a black man. This changes the people of Maycomb, Alabama’s views on Atticus. Many call him names and mostly white people hate his choice to defend Tom Robinson. Taking the case put his children, Scout and Jem, in danger. However, Atticus knew that defending Tom was the right thing to do. After all the events that happened in To Kill a Mockingbird, I believe Atticus defending Tom Robinson is the right thing to do. They learn at school, books, and, of course, their dad Atticus. Atticus is trying to teach them to be respectable and set a good example for them. I think when Atticus was given the case, it was a perfect opportunity for him to model equality. “ Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit'em, but remember it’s a sin To Kill a Mockingbird” (Lee 119). When Atticus explained this to the kids, he wasn’t really talking about birds. He was talking about innocence. It’s a sin to kill a “mockingbird” because they don’t do anything at all to get killed. Atticus is explaining that he doesn’t want the kids targeting at innocent things. Boo Radley is a mockingbird. Atticus wants the kids to be respectable and leave Boo alone. “ What Mr. Radley did was his own business. If he wanted to come out, he would” (Lee 65). He wants Jem and Scout to be respectful towards others. He tries to teach a lesson of what true courage is. The kids thought of Atticus as courageous because he was able to shoot a gun. Atticus’ lesson to them was that true courage is doing what is right, even if you think you’ll fail. “ …. I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee

When Jem, Dill, and Scout try to sneak a letter to Boo Radley but are caught by Atticus he says, “‘Son,’ he said to Jem, ‘I’m going to tell you something and tell you one time: stop tormenting that man. That goes for the other two of you.’” (Lee, 54) This conversation with Atticus shows his respect for Boo Radley despite having either never talked to him or having not talked him for a long time. In this instance, Scout had made an ill-mannered judgement of another young student in her class, so Atticus set her straight. You cannot correctly judge someone’s actions until you know all of their reasoning for it. And while that moment was very informative and relevant to the topic, there was another part of the book that I think radiates the point of this case, and that is the matter of “town weirdo” Boo Radley. Or at least, that’s what he’s known as to most at the beginning of the tale. As events transpire, you increasingly familiar with him and who he really is, and realize that many horrific rumors about him could not possibly be legitimate.…

Joseph Crespino argues that Atticus Finch felt the need to take the case and help Tom Robinson who was "naïve" because, of his paternalistic side. (Crespino The Strange Career of Atticus Finch, JSTOR.com) To justify this idea of paternalism he says, " Tom Robinson is sweetly innocent and naïve; Atticus feels a moral responsibility to defend him, as the novel's tide attests, because a black man accused in the Jim Crow South was as helpless as a mockingbird." In chapter ten of To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus says, "… Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Lee,) Marie Failinger, the author of Gentleman as Hero:…

The fact that Author Radley was actually a good person awaked Scout morally, and let she understand Atticus words. “One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.” The branch line of Boo Radley had been a central one that connected the whole story, and Harper Lee wrote it in a refreshing and adorable way to reveal the essence of the book’s theme. A mockingbird is a lovely songbird that does no harm but goods to people, and to kill one is completely against human conscience. However, a mockingbird’s benefit and innocence to human is much easier to grasp, than that of a person.…

[p.250] Atticus is respectful to everyone including the one who tried to kill his children, Bob Ewell. He is teaching, Jem and Scout how to act and cooperate with people, through example, by asking them to forgive Bob just because they do not know what is wrong with the Bob’s life. This is one of Atticus most selfless moments because he is one, forgiving Bob Ewell for all of his threats, and two, is willing to be killed to save his children. I have chosen to write my term paper over the book To Kill a Mockingbird. Going more in-depth, I am going to write about the character Atticus Finch: how Atticus is now perceived and how the reader should perceive Atticus based on his actions in the book. I am going to argue that he was not just a common man who was doing his job, but a revered hero who went against the social normal, and helped an African-American man who at that time was less than his white counterparts. There are many factors that will affect how you view Atticus Finch such as: the narrator of the book is his daughter Scout, and also the reader who determines for themselves if Finch deserves the title of revered hero for doing his job. While writing my term paper I plan to merge factors from both sides of the spectrum to strengthen my argument.…

Atticus Finch’s Closing Argument in Defending Tom Robinson Ladies and gentleman of the court, thank you for your service and attention. Many years ago, Hinmatonyalaktit, also known as Chief Joseph, said, “The earth is the mother of all people and all people shall have equal rights upon it.” Therefore not only whites, but all people, regardless of the colour of their skin, deserve to have the same privileges, the same opportunities, and the same rights.
