An everyday hero is someone who risks histheir lifelives for others when he does notdon’t have to and stands up for what iswhat’s right even when everybody else is against himthem. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch acts as an everyday hero through conflicts that arise in 1930s racist Alabama. Atticus Finch practices law and is appointed to defend a black man. When racist troubles arise, Atticus exhibits courageous, respectful, and responsible traits throughout this novel. Atticus’s first virtue is courage. When Atticus agrees to take Tom Robinson’s case, a group of men come to talk to Atticus and say, “You’ve got everything to lose from this Atticus” (Lee 195). At the beginning of this novel, Scout reveals, “His first two clients were the last two persons hanged in the Maycomb County jail” (5). This displays a sense of responsibility because he felt that even though he had advised them to do the right thing, they were his clients and they deserved to have someone there for them. Atticus felt that, even though his clients were guilty, they deserved fair representation for their crime. Beyond that, Miss Maudie tells Scout and Jem, “‘Did it ever strike you that Judge Taylor naming Atticus to defend that boy was no accident?’” (289). This shows responsibility because, even though he was forced to take this case, he tried his hardest. He tried his hardest to free a innocent black man at a time when there was mucha lot of racism in the South. Responsibility defined by Atticus’s character is sticking with someone, or something, even when it isit’s not popular. Through this novel many virtues are revealed through the character Atticus.
