Atticus Finch: A True Hero

Improved Essays
The person I view as a brave, righteous, hero is a fictional man from a timeless Southern novel. This man is none other than Atticus Finch. In my mind, he perfectly embodies the everyday hero. A person who is brave, stands up for what they believe in, and ultimately sets a positive example that everyone should follow. A person that has set an example before Atticus’ time is Irene Gut Opdyke. She was a woman who defines righteousness based on her work in the Holocaust. Irene helped Jews in concentration camps secretly, proving that any person can help even if they are not doing much. Heroes are brave no matter what the consequence, showing immense amounts of selflessness for others. A person who compares to Opdyke is Atticus Finch. Thesis …show more content…
Even now, in modern day, this man is a role model to all and can still be looked at as a hero in literature. Atticus describes courage as, “Knowing you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through. No matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” (Lee, 116) This example illustrates Finch’s knowledge of true courage. Atticus Finch is, and forever will be, a part of literature history, and a role model to all. A genuinely timeless character. Atticus Finch’s examples in To Kill a Mockingbird show good qualities that he possesses. I strongly believe in having morals, or knowing what is right and what’s wrong. When Finch defends Robinson in the novel, he is choosing the right decision. This part in the book truly made me step back and look at things from a different perspective. Could such an unpopular view at the time actually be wrong? Atticus proves just that. He has illustrated the importance of standing up for what you believe in. As an introvert, Finch has taught me to always speak my mind, even if my opinion isn’t the most favored one. In the novel, Atticus Finch changed people’s opinions, but could he change the

    Atticus Finch Argument

I have chosen to write my term paper over the book To Kill a Mockingbird. Going more in-depth, I am going to write about the character Atticus Finch: how Atticus is now perceived and how the reader should perceive Atticus based on his actions in the book. I am going to argue that he was not just a common man who was doing his job, but a revered hero who went against the social normal, and helped an African-American man who at that time was less than his white counterparts. There are many factors that will affect how you view Atticus Finch such as: the narrator of the book is his daughter Scout, and also the reader who determines for themselves if Finch deserves the title of revered hero for doing his job. While writing my term paper I plan to merge factors from both sides of the spectrum to strengthen my argument.…

Atticus Finch shows courage by not following the social norms of Maycomb and instead following his own beliefs and morals. For example, when Tom Robinson was accused of rape by Mayella Atticus was tasked to defend Tom and he accepted even though he was a black person despite knowing that he will not win and the town will despise him for it. They started saying on how he defended black people and some getting to a point where…

J.F. Clark once said, “The bravest of individuals is one who obeys his or her conscience”. To me, this quote means that the strongest and bravest people are ones who do what they think is right. This quote is true because all the brave characters in stories know in their heart, what's right and what's not. In the play The Crucible and the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, where the main characters follow their gut, they show how courageous they truly are.…

Tom Robinson is an African American who has been judged for raping a white woman, and even though he is guilty before any proofs (due to racism), Atticus choses to do what everyone else was unwilling to do which was going against racism as a white man, and knowing it would bring chaos to his life. Atticus describes courage when he taught Jem a life lesson, he said: “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.…

To Kill A Mockingbird The people who are quiet and observant are the people who change the world. This statement is true because when people take the time to actually listen to others, they find a way to do something that will contribute to mankind. Ralph Waldo Emerson defines a successful legacy as having gained the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of youth, and as having endured a loss due to misplaced trust, yet still managing to find the best in people; as leaving the world a better place through kindness, courage and determination. There is a large cast of characters in the literary world who fit these criteria, from Sydney Carton and other timeless heroes of the beloved classics to real world people from modern day nonfiction. One of the greatest examples of a successful legacy in the world of literature is indisputably Atticus Finch of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Admirable Qualities Few people have noble character and ethics. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, an aged man named Atticus holds all the virtues of an estimable man and father. Atticus sees life differently in his Southern world than the average fifty-year-old man. He reads books and the newspaper in his free time and walks to work rather than drives, but more importantly he keeps his ethics straight in his culture of racial division. His wisdom, determination, and patience provide him with a pathway to change the lives of others.…

Atticus perseveres through his problems and acts upon his role in society, to do what is right. He explains to Scout that “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win…” (76) Atticus is a remarkable man because he defends Tom Robinson in the case even though he knows that in society at the time, when it’s a black man’s word against a white man’s, the white man always wins. He represents a light in a time of darkness because even when most people neglect to defend what is morally correct, he fights for the Negro citizens and tolerates the insults and shame he continually faces. When Scout talks about a book that Atticus read to her, she tells him about a misunderstood character who “was real nice” and didn’t do anything wrong even if people thought he did and Atticus tell her that “Most people are…when you finally see them.” (281) Atticus refers to Boo Radley because while he knew about Boo and respected him staying in the house all the time, most people assumed the worst and let their ignorance interfere with the truth.…
