In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee portrays Atticus as a very brave man who defies the “norm” of Maycomb County and in many people's eyes is a hero, while keeping in mind a hero always has his weaknesses. The story takes place in a small town in Alabama called Maycomb County during the 1930s. The town is based on gossip as a form of entertainment, and racism. In Maycomb, you are judged by social status, money, and skin color. Bravery in this story means sticking to your moral code even if that means making other people angry or disappointed.
