“He didn’t do the things our schoolmates fathers did...when Jem wanted to tackle him Atticus would say no” (Lee 84). In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird which takes place in Maycomb County, Alabama, Atticus Finch is appointed to defend a black man by the name of Tom Robinson who is being charged for apparently raping nineteen-year-old Mayella Ewell, which was uncommon back in that time period due to race tension, in the story Jem and Scout Finch discover and witness some stuff that changes their view on life and people, to some extent Harper Lee’s intention was to portray Atticus as a good parent but there are some qualities that he has that proves him not a good parent. When Walter Cunningham Scout was being disrespectful when she rudely pointed out that he intentionally poured syrup all over his food it was Calpurnia who called Scout into the kitchen so she could talk some sense into her head when it should've been Atticus who should've done that since he is the father, look at Scout in particular she’s always doing or saying something that she has no business doing or saying like when she was having a conversation with her Uncle Jack about his cat Rose and Scout said “Aw,that’s a damn story”(Lee 78). and al Atticus said was “Don’t pay her any attention Jack she’s trying you out, Cal says she’s been cursing frequently now” Scout is only six-years-old and she was using profanity and by Atticus saying this he is kind of implying that it’s okay for her to use that kind of language and it’s clearly not.

Some might say that Atticus is a good parent because he teaches his kids “life lessons” and raises them up to live a good,positive lifestyle but they problem with that is the things they’re being taught they aren't fully developed or matured to do about they do not how to process or handle the information another reason some might view Atticus as a good parent is because he stood up for his beliefs and what he views as right,in him doing so he puts
