Atticus Father Quotes

As I am reading the story, I am Characterizing Atticus in two different ways. First, Atticus is a good father. One reason that he is a good father is that he is flexible and open minded. For example, most parents do not let their children run around all day without supervision. According to Mrs. Dubose, “It was heartbreaking the way Atticus Finch let her children run wild”(Lee 133). This quote shows that it is not normal to let your children be more independent, therefore resulting in Atticus being more open minded. Another way that Atticus is open minded is that he lets the kids go to church with Calpurnia. For example, Atticus teaches the kids courage by saying “It’s when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Lee 149). This quote shows how Atticus is teaching the kids life lessons and being a good father. Atticus also teaches the kids bravery, and he teaches them this by sticking up for what he believes in. Since Atticus is not a racist he does not believe in the town mob. He shows this bravery by defending himself and Jem against the mob, therefore showing he is a good father. Lastly, Atticus protects his children. He protects his children by killing the dog that came into the city. They used to call Atticus One-Shot Finch because he was great with a rifle. When the mob arrived they demanded Atticus move away from the jailhouse door so they can get Tom Robinson. But Atticus refuses until the men later leave. This shows Atticus’ willingness to protect the town, and it also shows he is a good guy. The last reason to why Atticus is a good person is that he has the ability to do what is right. When Jem and Scout get harassed by Mrs. Dubose every day when they walk by her house, Jem snaps when she is poking fun at Atticus. Jem than wrecks Mrs. Dubose's flowers and making a mess of her yard, resulting in Jem's punishment. Although the punishment may not be fair, Atticus does the right thing and makes Jem go to Mrs. Dubose’s house because he knows she needs it. This shows that Atticus has the ability to do whats right and is a good person. Another reason to why Atticus is a good person is that he defends Tom Robinson’s case. Like I have said before racism was a big part of the deep south, and Atticus’ ability to get through the criticism and persevere means that he is a good person and has the ability to do what is right.
