Q1) At the end of the novel, Atticus says to Heck Tate. "Sometimes I think I am a total failure as a parent..." Do you agree that Atticus is a "total failure as a parent"? (page 279)
Failure is described as a situation where one is unable to accomplish the goals that were initially set. Being a total failure would imply that one has zero success in achieving whatever he had set for himself. Was Atticus unable to do his part for the family? Did he fail completely in carrying out his role as a parent? Well, I would have to disagree. I feel that he was able to prove to be Jem's and Scout's nurturer of moral values and teacher. He was also able to be their role model. However, he did have his shortcomings.

Although Mrs Dubose was rude to him, he still respected her. By doing so, he was able to show to Jem and Scout that no matter how much they got agitated, they still had to be patient with her. He did this in front of them in hopes that they would follow his example. It was to show them that Mrs Dubose was not as frightful as what they had thought and that they should remain calm whenever they faced similar situations in the future. At this point, Scout believed that Atticus was the bravest person in the world while in actual fact it was Mrs Dubose who was able to stay strong in the difficult periods. He helped Mrs Dubose by ordering Jem to read her stories and did not take any foul things she had called him in the past into consideration. Through this incident, he was able to show Jem and Scout what respect meant.
When Atticus thought that Jem had killed Bob Ewell, he did not try to shrink Jem away from his responsibilities and actions. He believed that temporarily shielding was not wise for the long run. "Let the county come and bring him sandwiches. I don't want him growing up with a whisper about him". Atticus would rather endure the discomfort of Jem facing an unfortunate punishment for his actions than put it away although he had the option of doing so. This was a good example of showing Scout that the truth should never be silenced no matter how painful the consequences
