Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder otherwise known as ADHD is the most common behavioral disorder in children in the United States affecting about 4.7 million children ages 3-17. The most common treatment children with ADHD is drug therapy, a prescribed stimulant narcotic. The number of children in the United States who are treated with prescription drugs for ADHD has increased significantly. The concern between doctors, parents, and child advocates are that too many children are unnecessarily taking ADHD medications. In the 1970s 1% of the American school children between the age of 4-17 were thought to have ADHD (Daniel F). Centers for Disease Control (CDC) had researchers find that in 2013, 11% of children 4-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD (Alice Park). There are three different subtypes of ADHD that are treated by a drug therapy. The three different types are: predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type is hyperactivity and impulsivity behavior and doesn’t involve the inattentiveness. Predominantly inattentive type is an inattentive behavior and wouldn’t include hyperactivity or impulsivity. It also comes down to the number of mother’s trying their children’s medications for ADHD. There has been an increase in women taking Adderall between the age of 26 and 39 to 750 percent between 2002 and 2010 (Dan Harris). Majority of these mothers aren’t taking prescription medication because they need it. They feel that Adderall will make them a better mom. The threat towards taking medications for people who are without a real diagnosis will also boost their productivity level. Numerous women have tested their children’s medication and after the fact they realized the positive effects it has on them. Mother’s would sooner receive medications of their own by imitating symptoms, or obtaining the pills by underhanded means. Faking symptoms, trying out their own children’s medication, and finding ways to receive medications
