According to the DSM-V (2013), Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is defined as a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development (DSM-V) for at least six months. ADHD has two sub-types that can present independently or combined. Inattention manifests in behavioral symptoms like difficulty sustaining attention in tasks and play activities, failure to give close attention to details or make careless mistakes, appearing to not listen when spoken to, lacking persistence on instructions, assignments, or chores; difficulty with organization, avoiding tasks requiring sustained mental effort, easily distracted, often loses things required for necessary tasks, and is often forgetful in daily activities. Hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms include fidgeting, often leaving seat when remaining seated is expected, runs around or climbs on things at inappropriate times, inability to engage in leisure activities quietly, acts as if driven by an internal motor, often talks excessively, interrupts others or blurts out answers before the question is completed, and difficulty waiting for his/her turn. These behaviors are not solely due to defiance, oppositional behavior, or hostility. The exact cause of ADHD is unknown but factors like genetics, neurophysiology, and environmental factors like social environment, nutrition or brain injuries may be contributing factors to the disorder.
