Persons with developmental disabilities are marginalized, oppressed and stigmatized because of their diagnosis. There is a whole lot of prejudice and discrimination with people of disability because of their look and they are treated differently. A person with mental illness is labelled as crazy because of his or her disability but the same cannot be said to a person who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness like cancer. Society treat them as the problem and not a person with a problem. The UN estimates that almost one million people die due to suicide every year, and it is the third leading cause of death among young people worldwide. If we can’t talk about something, we remain ignorant, then we open ourselves to misinformation, prejudices, and fear. Remaining silence about disability is not helpful and is detrimental. With the aging population in the U.S, the population of people with disability is going to grow. Society needs to debunk the myth about disability by looking at their capabilities instead of their disabilities. It’s time society in general look at the social and economic benefit as a society by engaging the pool of talents with people with disabilities.
