How Is War Ethical Or Unethical

To Attack or Not to Attack It is December of the year 2004. A sudden, ground-trembling blast rocks the city of Mosul in northern Iraq. There is confusion and people bustling about the streets. The wounded cry out in pain as they search for help in the thick, dusty smoke. The bodies of men litter the area surrounding what was left of the car that had exploded. Fourteen United States soldiers and four American contractors were killed (Sanders). Tie together Throughout history, warfare has advanced significantly regarding aspects such as weaponry and strategy making it more brutal now than it has ever been. However, should there even be wars? Is war righteous and ethical? War can be either moral or immoral as long as the intentions of …show more content…
Soldiers are risking their lives everyday to help themselves or others but to do that involves killing people. It is not moral for one human to value their life or beliefs more than another human’s. Additionally, not only are those in combat killing the opponent’s troops, but innocent bystanders are also harmed and often killed (Watson). It is immoral for someone not wanting to be entangled in the war to loose their life just for happening to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Today, there are many more lives being lost than in past wars due to breakthroughs in technology that are leading to more powerful and destructive weapons. For example, in the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865, weapons included heavy swords and rifles. On the contrary, modern wars include guns such as the AK-47, a much lighter rifle with more control during automatic and the ability to carry more loads of ammo. Another modern weapon is M16 rifles with the capability to self load, hold a 30-round magazine, and have accurate shots from over 550 meters away and fire 12 to 15 rounds per minute (Mizokami). There is also speculation of developing better nuclear weapons and submarines. Regardless, having weapons and the ability to kill people does not always make it morally right to do

This highlights that war never changes, it is always brutal, and violent. However, the fact that almost any graphic war picture shows that war is necessary. Even though it would be nice if no one fought it goes against human nature. Humans have fought over pretty much everything, from something as small as the stealing of a purse, to something as large as crimes against humanity such as mass genocide. While war is terrible, some good does come out of it.…

It is true that a large amount of soldiers in the Vietnam War were treated unfairly upon their return, and it is possible that some could sway their opinions in a way that could hurt the soldiers themselves. Another one in the film had a girlfriend he intended to marry at the beginning of the film. Partially through, he receives a “Dear John” letter that explains that she no longer wants to talk to him because her college friends had convinced her that it was “immoral” to marry a murderer. The soldier himself doesn’t even make it to the end of the battle, meaning that he had lost both his love and his life to the Vietnam War. Soldiers fighting in wars today do still have to deal with unpredictable combat situations and times when they may be facing a losing effort, and it is true that to some people, the military are not performing the most moral of acts, although the public opinion today is nowhere near as bad as it had been during the Vietnam War, when there were people on the streets demonstrating against the war, the draft, and…

War. Some consider it as a necessary evil, something that we need but don’t want. Others think of war as horrendous violence and death that is unnecessary. On one hand, war has the ability to erase injustice, end tyranny, and bring freedom and liberty to people’s lives. On the other hand, war is a brutal, violent, and tragic tool, and there is always a different way to settle conflicts, such as negotiation.…

Throughout history there has always been a predicament that led to war. In that case, it is safe to assume that there will always be war, and that war can be morally justifiable. By society's standards "morality" is typically associated with the creation or demand for peace and independence. In order to obtain peace when there is a threat one must defend oneself or attack the oppressor.…

“War does not determine who is right- only who is left,” is a quote by Bertrand Russell. This spectrum expresses the casualties of war. In other words, Russell means war is used as an outlet to define a “winner”, or in this case, someone who is right. The veiled truth is that there are no true winners of war when comparing the damage created and the lives lost. Looking at war through that perspective, John F. Kennedy, among others, also agreed.…

Ever since, the dawn of man war has been a part of man’s culture. War has been both vital and fatal to the survival of many cultures in the world. But, when the powers that oversee force people that they have ignored and quelled for many years to fight a war against people who pose no threat to them then problems emerge. The real purpose of war from the attacker’s viewpoint is not to protect an idea or defend the innocent from evil, the real purpose is to secure the resources that the territory possesses no matter who is invading. The Vietnam war is the perfect example of this, where the USA who was all about democracy and freedom had a dictator in South Vietnam make sure that the resources of the land got to the United States.…

As stated in my thesis, I believe the only time necessary to go to war is when our country is in danger and our allies are slowly turning into our enemies. In an article titled, “Why We Fight Wars”, it states, “We might add that modern war is very, very expensive. For example, by any estimate the eventual costs (including things like veterans’ care) of the Iraq war will end up being well over $1 trillion dollars, that is, many times Iraq’s entire G.D.P” (Krugman, 2014). Going to unnecessary wars loses resources that can be saved for more serious events that war is…

Violence and destruction can never be quelled as it is inextricably linked to human nature. We as human beings wage war, and send the young, able bodied males to fight our battles while bureaucrats and wealthy individuals continue with their typical lives unaware of others’ misfortune and sacrifice; protected by laws and riches. Those who have the most life to live are sent to the front lines, in a way O’brien knew he would perish in the heat of a war he had no part in starting. A future Ivey league student being scooped up in the draft made next to no sense, young adults like him were the future of America, therefore; shipping him off to war would be sending the country's future into chaos and certain death. A government that could so easily strip him of his life and bright future had to be unjust.…

In a war, there are two sides fighting, with each side believing that they are fighting for should be the right and moral thing. On the battlefield, you fight, and you kill people. The people opposing you could possibly be innocent people who joined the war by being drafted or people who were in a position not to be on the front lines, but were moved from lack of bodies. In this situation, regardless of how you arrived there, you are fighting. You are killing people considered your enemy in self defense for not only your country but for yourself, to save your own life.…

From its earliest time, human history recounts wars among its civilizations. Wars were, and still are, typically accompanied by arguments for and against waging them. Many have justified war; many have lamented its consequences. It is said that war is a part of an effort to eradicate it all together someday, or that it is an inevitable part of life. War is a difficult subject to explain.…

To put it simply, some are not cut out for war. To take another’s life is not easy, but to live with it after, that is the hard part, some people are just not designed to kill, and if forced to in a life and death situation the results are often disastrous, often they will freeze up which can result in their imminent death. But if they do manage to pull the trigger, then often something inside them will snap irreversibly, and no amount of therapy will be able to revive them, they will be lost. However it is not just the psychological shock of taking a life, it is the build-up prior to service. The social pressure.…

This way of thinking also raises the soldier up to a higher level of respect. Their humanity is in the forefront of in calling it a moral injury and we in turn, have to look at our responsibility in asking them to go to war and ‘defend’ our so-called ‘rights’, to the minerals, oil and to defining the rights of other people in their countries. We as a society need to look at what we have become as a nation, that treats it’s military like a police force, but one that meets the wants of the governments American ideals and consumerism of the people. We are not defending our country when we go off to war, we are not being threatened; we are projecting our idea of what the world should be and how it should operate onto other countries, we are protecting a way of life that we have become accustomed to, at the cost of others’ lives and…

The Vietnam War was a devastating war for both America and Vietnam. The Vietnam war was between Northern and Southern Vietnam due to the communist government in Northern Vietnam. The United States began the war simply sending aid to Southern Vietnam, but soon got much more involved. Many Americans opposed America’s involvement at all because they were not directly involved in the war, causing citizens and soldier to be unsure of their reason for fighting and not aware of the actual struggles and difficulties that came along with war. In the movie Platoon, directed by Vietnam War veteran Oliver Stone, the main character Chris Taylor, is a soldier in the Vietnam War and his experience symbolize the real experiences of a soldier in the Vietnam…

War has been something used to potentially obtain or fight for a certain land, right, or money. An example of a war that had a side fighting for a freedom was in the American Revolution. Even though the Americans were victorious, there were many deaths in the process, which brings us to the question: should war be a part of our world. One one side, you can be fighting to free yourself, defend yourself, or stand up for what is right. Even though this is true, many deaths and injuries occur during war, and a large portion of the people killed are innocent civilians.…
