Today, most families are faced with hardships, but Jeannette Walls and John Steinbeck wrote some of the best examples of endurance in their novels The Glass Castle and The Grapes of Wrath. In The Glass Castle, Walls wrote about her childhood and problems that were unique to her family. Steinbeck wrote about a very common issue that tenant farmers faced during the dust bowl and Great Depression of the 1930’s. He wrote of a fictional family, the Joads. The Walls and Joad family both lived their lives under completely different circumstances, but they had two common characteristics that allowed them to survive, loyalty and resilience.…

I found a lot of connections between the first chapter of the novel and this section. One that stood out to me was when the colonel talked about how those fighting in the war were just babies. He said “It’s the Children’s Crusade”, which is what Vonnegut told Mary O’Hare he would name his novel after she said that the people fighting in the war were just babies. I also found the structure of the Tralfamadore book that Billy was reading was very similar to the structure of Slaughterhouse-Five.…

To begin with, rites of terror are rituals that cause intense negative emotions for the people who are about to go through it. The rites of terror are performed in many cultures around the world and there are many reasons why these rituals occur. The main one I would say is to officially integrate the performer into society. The actual terror is what leaves a long lasting memory for the performer so they can remember what they have gone through. In the chapter “Terror” by Harvey Whitehouse he states, the memory ensures the participants will always remember who was there with them during the ritual, which establishes a strong bond with those who also went through it together (Whitehouse 269).…

Often, Haruki Marukami’s short stories are one-sided and only demonstrate one side to gender representations. Most of Marukami’s fictional stories exemplify patriarchy in Japan, during which his female characters are positioned as objects for the subjectivity of males. The women used in Murakami ‘sworks are not empowered by feministic views; thus, the female subjects do not stand up for their own well-being. Throughout Haruki Marukami’s stories, female characters are used to represent the realities that several females faced in contemporary Japan, such as: isolation and seclusion, contradictive feminism, and fierce violence. This is evident in Marukami’s…
