This barbaric act has everyone questioned. At 8:15 am on August 6, 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb which carried 20,000 tons of TNT on Hiroshima, Japan instantly wiping out about 140,000 people. After three days later another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. About 80,000 more people died. Mostly civilians died during this tragic time. The decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was not a military necessity because civilians were harmed, it went against the league of nations proclamations against the air bombings , it caused radiation poisoning and personal testimonies weren’t looked upon. Ralph Bard on document T states, “...before the bomb is actually used against Japan that Japan should have some preliminary warning for say two or three days in advance.” Ralph has been involved in the atomic bomb creation. His opinion is that either way Japan would have surrendered and that the US should have dropped the bomb in an unpopulated area like a jungle. This would prove what this bomb and the US were capable of. Franklin D. Roosevelt who was not even around when the bomb was dropped had his own statement. As shown in document S, “ If resort is had to this form of inhuman barbarism during the period of tragic conflagration with which the world is now confronted, hundreds of thousands of innocent human beings who have no responsibility for…..will lose their lives” As FDR states innocent lives are being taken and they have no involvement in all this. They could have at least scared the Japanese and used another alternative. As shown in document L, “Critics of Truman’s decision to Use Atomic Weapons” “Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped.” If you compare the US to Japan it is obvious that the US could take down Japan any day.
