Fighter planes were all around planes and were known for escorting, defending and attacking. One fighter plane that contributed greatly to World War II was the Spitfire. The Submarine Spitfire was a British made fighter known for its maneuverability, speed and ability to fly at high altitudes. The Spitfire reached a maximum speed of 360 miles per hour and a ceiling of 34,000 feet (“Spitfire”). Also the Spitfire’s guns were very powerful, and with multiple turrets the spitfire could shoot a fast stream of bullets. The Spitfire played an important role in the Battle of Britain in 1940, in which Germany sought to dominate the air. The victory rate of the Spitfire in the Battle was higher than its loss rate. In 1943 an Italian Physicist, Enrico Fermi, created a chain reaction that changed the course of history. The U.S started the Manhattan project in fear of if the Germans got the atomic bomb first that they would use it for the wrong cause. There were two bombs that were dropped in World War II. Both were built and dropped by the U.S. The United States dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. This bomb was called "Little Boy." Little boy was a Uranium bomb that weighed 8,900 pounds. It wiped out nearly five square miles of Hiroshima–60 percent of the city. More than 78,000 of the city 's total population of 348,000 were killed; an estimated 51,000 were injured or missing (“World”). The second bomb that was used, Fat Man, was dropped on Nagasaki. The Fat Man bomb was the larger bomb out of the 2. It was also much more complicated because it was an implosion type nuclear weapon with a plutonium filling. Fat Man measured 10 feet 8 inches long and 5 feet in diameter and had a blast force that was equivalent to 18,600 tons of TNT (“World”). After the second bomb was dropped, in fear of the U.S having another atomic bomb, Japan surrendered to the
