Nuclear weapons are said to harvest the power of a thousand suns. This was seen in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. ‘Little Boy’ and ‘Fat Man’, killed 60,000 people on impact. Just 8kg of plutonium is needed to create a blast with a 260km radius. It is an efficient way to end wars but it comes at a cost. Their uses in the attack on Japan were groundless. There were other options but US military wanted to flex their military might instead of saving fatalities.

President Truman wanted a speedy end to the war but contrary to popular beliefs he didn’t fully support the decision to drop the atomic bomb. He fought in WW1 on the Western Front and knew the effects war had not only on the enemy but the innocent civilians. President Roosevelt left a legacy in which the Americans would be the one to end all war. Many of the Presidents contemporaries wanted to prove this. On the other hand he wanted to preserve as many lives as possible but through peer pressure he succumbed to killing over 200,000 people. The Japanese wanted to save their emperor. They thought that if they surrendered, their Emperor would be charged for war crimes against prisoners of war and most likely executed. Also, since the age of the samurai’s the nation was taught ‘death before dishonour’, no matter what they felt, breaking this stigma would result in shame.
