IATI has grown organically, in fits and starts, in rapid response to many external factors. When Abdon Villamizar, who lead IATI from 1968 to 1997, had to resign from his position due to a serious accident that incapacitated him for life, Vivian Deangelo was appointed in ‘98 to lead the organization into the new century by implementing innovative outreach, fundraising and audience development initiatives leading up to the creation of IATI's professional training unit, a touring children's repertoire, theater workshops, and the acquisition of state-of-the-art facility on E. 4th Street (Downtown Theater Row). This capital project, however, affected the company’s financial catastrophically. It was 2005 when IATI Theater and two other companies bought the 64 E. 4th Street building. It was 8 years of capital fundraising and renovation.…

On Sunday, June 21st, I went to see the Dallas Symphony Orchestra perform “The Music of John Williams and Hollywood’s Great Composers” at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. The concert was held in the church’s worship room at 6:30pm. This was a great place for the DSO to perform because the audience and the orchestra were very close and, in a way, felt more personal. The show included fourteen pieces: “Overture to Captain Blood by Korngold, ‘Tara’ – A Short Poem for Orchestra from Gone with the Wind by Steiner, arr.…

Standing on stage at The Kennedy Center singing to an audience of veterans, I realized my future accounting degree could combine my career with a valuable cause. After previously taking a high school finance course, I wanted to major in accounting. However, it was not until I participated in the 2015 National Memorial Day Choral Festival that I knew how to use it to serve those who have already served. When my choir director revealed the 2015 trip destination, I was overjoyed in anticipation of experiencing the nation’s capital for the first time in my life. As my choir started learning the festival music, I was awestruck by the dark lyrics of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ cantata “Dona Nobis Pacem” and inspired by others such as Mark Wilberg’s “Let Peace Then Still the Strife”.…

Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…

IDOMENEO: Production Review The University Center of the Arts staged a bold production of the acclaimed opera Idomeneo by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, it showcased the capacity of the Griffin Hall to present a fully decorated opera rather than a concert that uses nothing more than mere instruments, voices and the audience´s imagination. Instead, the department decided to produce a complete theatrical interpretation of Idomeneo, which worked to varying degrees. Branching off from a traditional aesthetic, the University Center of the Arts focused more on delivering a modernized and symbolically significant technical approach rather than attempting to emulate the traditional aspects to which the opera was first performed.…

    Opera Singer Stereotypes

When most people hear the words “opera singer,” their mind conjures up images of bloated women, plunked down in the middle of a stage, illuminated by a spotlight, dressed in exotic costumes, and screaming at the top of the lungs in even more exotic languages. But frankly that stereotype could not be more wrong; I know that for a fact. If those stereotypes were right, then I would not be writing this paper. I love opera. I have been addicted to it for over five years now, and the fire that burns within me has no signs of burning out any time soon.…
