Only a fraction of what Cam Newton, quarterback of the Carolina Panthers, makes. Sports involves at least two competitive opponents that compete against each other for entertainment purposes. Millions of people come to watch these events every year, and even one-third of the United States watched the Super Bowl last year. But does this mean that athletes should be paid the astronomical amount that they are? Professional athletes should not be paid the ridiculously high amount they are because of the way they tend to spend it, the money they can …show more content…
There are plenty of other jobs such as teachers, fireman, and the military who give more to society than just entertainment. The first big contributor to society are teachers. They educate the future leaders of America, and are paid just enough to get by if not less. In “Teachers Unions and Student Performance: Help or Hindrance?”, journalist Randall W. Eberts stated “America’s need to provide high-quality education to its children has never been greater.” This quote suggests the importance of teachers in our society, rendering the fact they should be paid more than professional athletes. Firefighters are the next contributor to society. They save peoples’ lives every day, should have more recognition than they are given, and deserve better pay. Firefighters can abide in the fire station for up to one-third of his or her life. Long hours like that proves a Firefighter that already spends a good bit of his life at the fire station, while also raising a family of his own, should in fact be paid more than a Professional athlete. Finally, the military deserves the most recognition for their bravery and astronomical contribution to society. Military families leave their household, their kids, and their spouses to fight for this country’s freedom, including freedom for these professional athletes who entertain the public for millions of dollars a year. There are many jobs such as teaching, firefighting and military who play important roles in todays’ society, much more important than athletes who play a sport for public entertainment, but athletes get paid much

Reading Response to ….. I have decided to write a response paper to Ekow N. Yankah’s: “Why N.C.A.A. Athletes Shouldn’t Be Paid”. I have chosen this article because I do not agree with his statement which addresses that student-athletes shouldn 't get paid. Universities are using their student-athlete’s popularity to promote their athletics program while the student-athletes are unable to promote their own image. Time is also very limited during the day for student athletes to get a job.…

I am personally a collegiate athlete and knows what an athlete goes through. Players shouldn’t get paid millions of dollars like professional athletes, because why would players go on to try and play professionally. On the contrary they should deserve some type of revenue whether it's for clothes shopping, take someone out on a date, gas money, etc. For example that’s the same thing as me asking my friend to do something for me and he does all the work while I sit back and relax.…

To begin with college athletes should be paid because they bring in money for colleges when they play on the field, court, and ect. When the athletes play for colleges they bring in revenue for the college. According to “Should college athletes be paid?” (2013), all colleges combined together made over 5 billion dollars in the 2013 NCAA football season and colleges even if they lost still made 500 million dollars or under and if they won the championship game you made over that amount, and if you won the…

They are paid based on the reality of how they stack up against their competing sports peers, who are normally the greatest athletes at what they do in the world (“6 Reasons Why Professional Athletes Are Not Overpaid”). Victims of the green-eyed monster really need to think about that before they start wanting to transfer the athlete’s money to themselves. Plus, using logic, the real reason professional athletes are paid high wages is because the entertainment market in competitive sports is extremely large. Sports fans pay big bucks to go see them play in stadiums, and advertisers pay high dollars to be associated with them on TV. Plus, and this is really important, the money that they make comes from private enterprises that are willing to pay for those athletes’ abilities.…
