Athletes Should Not Be Allowed To Learn In Sports

When does it matter who wins and who loses? Games aren’t solely based on the players signing up. Young competitors should be taught to work hard in order to be rewarded and participation trophies deprive them of important life skills such as learning to be a good sport when they lose. Young athletes are taught that even the ones who don’t put effort into their sport still receive trophies. When they come to this realization, their work ethic decreases dramatically. “Her daughter rarely showed up for her her soccer team. She had a terrible attitude,” (Turner). This daughter still received a trophy for being on the team that she did not actively participate in. The grading system at schools doesn’t give students passing grades, students must earn them themselves. So why should extracurricular activities be any different? One parent stated, “In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to anything in real life” (Diller). Children need to lose sometimes in order to learn the value of being a good sport. “ perhaps if we let them lose and teach them to congratulate those who win, we would help them build the motivation and endurance needed to face real life challenge” (Diller). Praise should be given to children only when it is deserved. It should not be overused or excessive. “The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself” (Diller).
