Athens and Sparta differ greatly in the way they conduct their political policies. Athens was a democracy; the citizens were the ones that decided how things would run. Sparta was an oligarchy which was ruled by two kings. In Athens they had an assembly, which was open to all citizens. They were allowed to speak their minds and be open about the changes they wanted. Athens was considered to be the birthplace of democracy. The Athenian assembly, known as the “ekklesia”, sat to discuss political, militaristic and social matters and agendas in the pnyx. In Sparta citizens were trained at a young age to be in the military. Athens left their military to sea, they were not as militaristic as Sparta. They were more focused on art and music. One main difference between them was Sparta kept its distance from other territories. They would lend their military help when needed. Athens wanted to acquire as much land as possible. The Spartan society was very much focused on obedience and war. The Spartans would conquer their neighboring districts and would then take those citizens in as slaves. The lifestyle for a Spartan was simple. Athenians had a more open outlook about the world. Athenian boys were not forced into joining the army like the Spartans. They were able to get a good education and could choose to pursue fields in the arts and sciences. In Sparta the citizens were not open to education; they concentrated on the military strength each citizen possessed. They weren’t involved much with the outside
