For this analysis, the artwork I selected a Volute Krater made in Greece during the 4th century B.C.E. The artist, The Underworld Painter, uses several lines, especially in the temple made for Atlas. The horizontal and vertical lines give the temple definite shape because of the thickness and they signify that a hero who has died, is the focal point on the back of the vase. The artist also uses curved lines at the top of the vase to show the richness of detail and drive the story further. The artist also uses the pointing hands of several figures to show a psychological point; Atlas on his throne and Selene driving her chariot.…
Also, both of the vessels are painted using the black-figure technique, which means artists painted the vessels using black paint to outline and distinguish the major subjects of the work. The high similarities of the two Greek vessels show that the “Two-handled amphora with snakes on…
The Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology holds numerous pieces of artwork from all different time periods. What makes each of these pieces distinguishable are the specific style and details incorporated, as each civilization from each different era had techniques that were followed that would define their artwork as their own. Progression was shown through the use of emerging techniques. This is shown specifically in a piece at the Museum entitled the Attic Black- Figure Amphora, an ancient Greek piece that has certain elements integrated that was innovative for the time. This work by Exekias is an interpretation and narrative of Greek heroes and myths while showing the progression in the artist’s style over the last few centuries.…
The ancient Greek civilization had two memorable and influential achievements, one of which was architectural and the other political. As seen in the Parthenon, the Greeks were unbelievable architects, and one of the most important inventions, if not the most important invention, was the column (document 2). The column can be seen on many Greek structures including manors, government buildings and other buildings. Columns augmented the Greeks capability of building structures. Another achievement of the ancient Greeks was the ideology of a democracy.…
Ancient Athens Argumentative Essay Democracy is the government that everyone gets a say in everything. Ancient Athens was supposedly one of the few truly democratic societies. The question is, were they truly democratic. There are people on both sides of the issue.…
The theme of this embellishment is not known, but its form was unusual in that white marble figures, carved in relief were attached to a flat background of dark gray marble. Typically, a frieze presents painted figures on a monochrome background. What makes the Acropolis so amazing is the buildings within its walls. There is the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, the temple of Athena Nike, and more. After ascending nearly three hundred feet up the hill you come to what is called the "Propylaea".…
The sculpture produced in ancient Greece is naturalistic compared to artworks and sculptures from previous times and cultures. The form of body is not stylized, nor does the bends in its arms and legs have sharp edges, the body is actually smooth and natural looking. The figure also has normal sized eyes and not enlarged eyes and male breast. The figure is in contrapposto pose like many of the other figures from this ancient Greek period.…
It is well known by scholars that the Etruscan civilization was influenced by Greek culture. They received a large amount of information from the Greeks and utilized new artistic traits. A lot of Greek mythology appears in Etruscan artwork as well. Some Etruscan pieces indicate that they were even able to learn how to use bronze as a medium.…
This excerpt displays the intense unhappiness that stems from this women’s marriage. She sees her marriage as a trap, almost as if she is a prisoner or a slave to a man she sees as a foreigner. Married women spent most of their time indoors tending to household duties even in times in which their husband was occupied with agricultural work or military duties (Fantham et. al. 71).…
In this paper I will differentiate several descriptions of government and how they related to Ancient Greece. The term monarchy refers to absolute power, usually, lying with one individual. The king or queen inherits power through the dynastic family lineage (Kostiner, n.d.). Sparta was an example of this, but unusual in the fact it was a dual monarchy born out of two family lines descending from the twin sons of Aristodemus (Halsall, 1999).…
In his essay “Bronze Sculpture in the Hellenistic East,” Matthew P. Canepa argues that Hellenistic bronzes, as objects of material culture, offer insight into the cultural exchanges happening between the Hellenistic world and various other ancient cultures. According to Canepa, Greek visual culture “served as prestigious means of display and communication within and beyond the lands of Alexander’s former empire” (83). The iconography of the bronze sculptures remained inherently Hellenistic, yet their form often reflected the local style of the artists that created them. The bronze sculptures found in the Greco-Bactrian colonies of Alexander the Great amalgamated Hellenistic and Eastern artistic practices, creating a body of work that becomes…
Penelope also was a weaver. Weaving during ancient Greece was extremely hard. Weaving required lots of skills and it ruined the weaver's hands. The yarn that weaver used could tear up people hands, it also caused calluses and blisters all over your hands. Penelope would weave all day and take the weaving apart all night.…
Ancient Greece possessed ample clay deposits, in particular large quantities of high quality secondary clay. The clay deposits in Athens were distinguished by their content of iron oxide and calcium oxide, which produced the reddish-orange colour of the fired clay, while Corinthian clay typically had a creamy-white appearance. Smaller amounts of specialist clays like kaolin (kaolinite) were also available, being reserved for decorative purposes. For example, the Greeks' characteristic black metallic glaze was produced using a clay low in calcium oxide but high in iron oxides and hydroxides. After the Minoan era, Greek vases were generally made using a potter's wheel, although handmade decorative elements were added to thrown pots.…
The Greek homes of the Archaic and Classical periods were pretty much straightforward in terms of design. The houses were centered on a courtyard, where that would be the scene for numerous ritual activities (Becker). The courtyard would also provide natural light for the small homes. The ground floor rooms would have included kitchen and storage rooms. Sometimes it would come with an animal pen and a latrine.…
The Bronze Age of Comic Books is an informal name for a period in the history of mainstream American comic books from 1970 to 1985. It follows the Silver Age of Comic Books.
