Athena Role In Greek Mythology

Thousands apon thousands of years ago in Ancient Greece there was a great significance towards Gods and Goddesses. To the Greeks the world was ruled by the Gods, and they were the reason many things happened in our world, mostly things that were unexplainable to the Greeks. The goddess Athena or to the Romans known as Minerva was one of the 12 major gods or goddesses that played a huge role in Greek and Roman mythology. Athena like the majority of the main gods and goddesses lived on Mt. Olympus. Athena is known as the goddess of war, wisdom, and also patroness of arts and crafts. The origin of how Athena came to be is quite unfamiliar. Zeus, Athena's father, feared that he would be overthrown by a son greater than he was born from his one …show more content…
One of the most known myths is about a very skilled weaver, Arachne, who pretty much challenged Athena to a contest where she disrespected the gods which then Athena didn't appreacticate so she turned her into a spider. From reading many different versions of the Arachne myth I have learned that the Greeks made this myth to help them understand why spiders were such good at weaving webs. The reasoning behind how Athens got its name and why Athena is their patroness of Athens is told in another myth known commonly as Poseidon vs. Athena. In this myth Poseidon and Athena have a competition over who deserves to be the patron or patroness of the city, Athens. The gift Posedion gave, of course was sea water, which turned out to be salty while at the end, Athena use her abilities of being wise and gave the people an Olive tree which was more useful the people of Athens for having the better gift Athena won that comparison. One of my favorite myths consiting of Athena is how Medusa became to be the monster we know today. There were mulitple different versions of how this myth goes some included position. One myth said that Poseidon raped Medusa Athena punished Medusa for a nonvirgin and cursed her with bad looks, on the other hand the popular of the two is how Medusa was so vain that she insulted Athenas monument and out of spite Athena made her

Each God or Goddess in Ancient Greek life had a role. Some provided people with a sense of hope, some provided people with fame, and the Goddess Athena provided a sense of authority for humanity. In The Oresteia, a trilogy written by Aeschylus her power is shown in many ways, stemming from the fact that she is the Greek Goddess of War, a job that requires a person to have a sense of strong authority. In a war zone, authority is necessary to gain and maintain control and to provide structure and order. Without these characteristics a person would not be successful in a war and being that Athena is the Goddess of War, it is necessary for her to show this type of control.…
