Besides being the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, Athena has done many things that would make her one of the greatest Gods of Olympus (with accounting for Zeus). First of all, Athena was the Patron of Athens, and bestowed the gift of the olive tree to the Athenians. This was decided as Poseidon (king of the ocean) was competing against Athena for the title of Patron, and the Athenians demanded a gift from the God/Goddess if they were chosen. Poseidon would give them a salt water spring (which was undrinkable), but Athena would give the Athenians the olive tree, and so they chose just that. This is important because the olive tree provided food, shade and wood to the people of Athens. Moreover, Athena assisted many heroes on their journeys, such as

The article written by Michael Murrin addresses three aspects of Athena inhabits in The Odyssey. The main argument that would be focused in my paper is Athena serving as a “Military Goddess” with malice intentions towards the end of the novel. We do not see her real intention of her companionship with Odysseus until the scene where Odysseus finally comes home to Ithaca. Although she helps Odysseus get home to his wife (despite the stalling from other gods/goddesses), she wants Odysseus to kill everyone of the suitors. Athena also proves to have similar traits of Odysseus throughout the novel, of being sly and witty.…

Each God or Goddess in Ancient Greek life had a role. Some provided people with a sense of hope, some provided people with fame, and the Goddess Athena provided a sense of authority for humanity. In The Oresteia, a trilogy written by Aeschylus her power is shown in many ways, stemming from the fact that she is the Greek Goddess of War, a job that requires a person to have a sense of strong authority. In a war zone, authority is necessary to gain and maintain control and to provide structure and order. Without these characteristics a person would not be successful in a war and being that Athena is the Goddess of War, it is necessary for her to show this type of control.…

This is illustrated through the fact that she has nothing to do other than get Odysseus home, as well as constantly talking about men's power. However, she does help Odysseus in Odyssey. Although Athena is an omnipotent goddess, her only concern is to ensure that Odysseus arrives in Ithaca safely. As she is talking to Zeus, her father, about returning Odysseus to his home, she says "I myself will go to Ithaca/ To put some spirit into his son [...] I'll escort him to Sparta and the sands of Pylos," (1.95-100) meaning that she will take Odysseus' son, Telemachus, to seek news of his father, prioritizing Odysseus' return home over anything else that she could possibly be doing at that point.…

Athena, the goddess of wisdom, uses her supernal knowledge to aid Odysseus in his perilous fights against monsters and atrocities, utilizing the skills of wit, strategy, and bravery. In one example of Athena’s aid to her hero-in-need, Odysseus prays, “if but Athena granted what I prayed for...a club, or staff, lay there along the fold-an olive tree, felled green and left to season.” presents Athena bestowing her help to Odysseus, using an olive tree to signify one of her symbols(Homer 764). Athena had never given Odysseus answers but she had guided him to use his brilliant intellect in order to conquer his challenges and obstacles to reach Ithaca, his home. One of the major ways Athena helps Odysseus is when she warns him of his Supreme Ordeal; the final test that proves whether or not Odysseus has proved himself a hero and king. When Odysseus arrives in Ithaca the first person to greet him is Athena, with bad news that suitors have taken over his kingdom and have been using his wife, and queen of Ithaca (Penelope) to become king, by trying to persuade her into marriage. Homer writes in Part Two of “The Odyssey”, “ he arrives in Ithaca after an absence of twenty years. The goddess Athena appears and informs him of the situation at home. Athena [...]directs him…”…

In The Odyssey, Athena’s purpose is to help Odysseus restore order to Ithaca. This would improve their civilization as a whole, and return Odysseus back to his family and rightful place at home. For Telemachus, their relationship is somewhat different. Athena is the spark that causes Telemachus to strive to find his father and himself in the process. Athena helps Odysseus and his family come together and to restore order to their palace, whereas God in Exodus uses Moses to help the Israelites.…

In this quarter, we learned about Greek and Roman civilization, and we were told that the Roman adapted their gods and goddesses from the Greek mythology. For this report, we have decided to do a comparison between a deity in Greek mythology and Roman mythology.
