Moreover, a similar hierarchy exits among the gods and goddesses where the gods have power over the goddesses. The head of the gods, Zeus, is a male and uses his authority to control the actions of the goddesses. The two most prominent examples of Zeus using his power over goddesses are Circe and Kalypso. Zeus sends Hermes to warn Odysseus and help him avoid "the malevolent guiles of Circe" (Homer 159). Hermes gives Odysseus instructions to make Circe obey him.…

The article written by Michael Murrin addresses three aspects of Athena inhabits in The Odyssey. The main argument that would be focused in my paper is Athena serving as a “Military Goddess” with malice intentions towards the end of the novel. We do not see her real intention of her companionship with Odysseus until the scene where Odysseus finally comes home to Ithaca. Although she helps Odysseus get home to his wife (despite the stalling from other gods/goddesses), she wants Odysseus to kill everyone of the suitors. Athena also proves to have similar traits of Odysseus throughout the novel, of being sly and witty.…

Athena Essay Pallas Athena is one of the most recognizable of the gods and goddesses of mount Olympus today. As the embodiment of wisdom and truth, she is someone I look up too and would very much like to emulate. While other gods and goddesses have been forgotten, or recognized only in name, Athena prevails as very well know. Athena is remembered so well because she was a direct descendent of one of the big three and very powerful, because the things she represented inspired humans to do great feats in her name, and because she left such glorious imprints in the early civilization of the world.…

Each God or Goddess in Ancient Greek life had a role. Some provided people with a sense of hope, some provided people with fame, and the Goddess Athena provided a sense of authority for humanity. In The Oresteia, a trilogy written by Aeschylus her power is shown in many ways, stemming from the fact that she is the Greek Goddess of War, a job that requires a person to have a sense of strong authority. In a war zone, authority is necessary to gain and maintain control and to provide structure and order. Without these characteristics a person would not be successful in a war and being that Athena is the Goddess of War, it is necessary for her to show this type of control.…

One of the major ways Athena helps Odysseus is when she warns him of his Supreme Ordeal; the final test that proves whether or not Odysseus has proved himself a hero and king. When Odysseus arrives in Ithaca the first person to greet him is Athena, with bad news that suitors have taken over his kingdom and have been using his wife, and queen of Ithaca (Penelope) to become king, by trying to persuade her into marriage. Homer writes in Part Two of “The Odyssey”, “ he arrives in Ithaca after an absence of twenty years. The goddess Athena appears and informs him of the situation at home. Athena [...]directs him…”…
