In the Ottoman Empire the Turks were one of many linguistic groups. The use of Arabic was well known and used in all of the religious practice. From the elite to the peasants everyone used the language to practice religion. Ataturk forcefully removed Arabic as their primary language.
The reason Sevan points out “two religions in Turkey” is because of the mass amounts secularism established by Ataturk. His main goal being to separate Turkey from their Ottoman past. Although Ataturk was on board for separation from Ottoman past there were many people in both the elite and peasants that didn’t. After all, all their life they had been practicing Arabic language and going to religious school for Islam.
