Every person in life will have things that make them struggle, these conflicts are what define us as people, make us stronger, and move us forward in life. These conflicts aren’t only exclusive to real life, they exist in stories, and they can change how the character thinks and acts and also how we, the readers, view these characters. The conflicts that I’m referring to in this are the main characters in the stories “At the Pitt Rivers” written by Penelope Lively and “A Sunrise at the Veld” written by Doris Lessing. “At the Pitt Rivers” is about a boy that thinks love is one dimensional and has no real meaning other than attractive (pretty) people being together. “A Sunrise at the Veld” is about a young man that doesn’t quite understand …show more content…
For the Museum boy, his conflict developed and changed throughout the entire story. In the start he was adamant (set) on keeping his thoughts on the couple “I don’t mind telling you, I thought it was disgusting” but after seeing them together more and more he eventually grew up and changed his ideals, not only to the couple, but to love in general, his conflict helped him grow and made him better (Pg. 1203). The Veld boy changed from his conflict aswell, it helped him grow up into being the “man” that he wanted to be and also understand the world better. The conflict gave him an insight (understanding) on how complex life is, how him and his family aren’t the only things that need to survive “the ants must eat too!”, his conflict taught him that even though he needs food to live, so do other animals (Pg. 1215). Both of them deal with these changes by developing (growing) with them, as their ideals change, they accept them and choose to grow with them, though the Museum boy wasn’t as quick as taking this change, he still took it and made it part of him. The characters change is due to the conflicts that they had to deal with but it’s more complex (complicated) than just changing in an instant, it was a tough change for both

A possible theme for all three stories is, “Sometimes you have to do things that you aren’t proud of.” Each of the three authors used the characters to help develop the theme. Munro presents the “character vs. self” conflict as the most significant. This is because it affected the inciting incident, rising action of the story, and climax. The first reason of why the “character vs. self” conflict was the most important, is because it created the inciting incident.…
