At The Front By Newton Baker

When you think of history, Historians always come to mind at least for myself. Historians are what bring history to the everyday person, they do the research and look into documentations of historical items, gather and compile information for knowledge as well as for the general population to gain knowledge of historical facts such a teachers and history majors. At least that is the view I have taken on what a historian does, I know there is so much more than that but that is a short version of my thoughts on what they do. Historians often use primary sources to gain knowledge on their subject of choice. With Primary source you have firsthand accounts of the time. Such as The speech “At the Front” by Newton Baker. Is him speaking about his …show more content…
But in looking though I found a secondary source in the form of a documentary about the “The War of the World: A New History of the 20th Century” which could still be used for many primary source martial so maybe documentaries can be both a primary and a secondary. Because the author was not born in the time, there for he did not witness nor use his five main senses for that part of history. Ferguson states what he has found with others findings and the research he has done. Therefore does his own writing on the subject it is secondary, he is also the narrator of the film. Now you can say that with the photos and short video clips used with in the film it would have …show more content…
I could still see a historian viewing this and taking photos and having questions or agreeing with unbiased parts of the film. With the extra tidbit that Niall Ferguson is in fact historian, make you think that he would stick more to the facts and be less bias then say someone such as Morgan Freeman who is an actor and a voice over for many things. Which leads me to a question I have come to realize I keep asking myself more and more; what I am getting myself into I love history I have a passion for history I want to be a historian one day, but I better get my butt in gear and learn all this citation stuff and how all these fact checks and all that work. I need to start finding Historians to talk to and make sure I am getting myself into what I think I am. Which brings me to a question I have to ask with my last source I found, to me it would be a secondary source because it is written by someone that did not live in that time, and was written with facts, but it is an article written by someone who studied the time period so even though it is fact would it be primary or secondary because it was written by a historian? The article in question is “The Great War: Shaping the 21st century” From what I read I do not see any form of bias it looks like a list of facts, but in looking at the outline for what makes a primary source this says it is a secondary. That is why I brought it up here because it seems to confuse me. I am assuming it to be a secondary

A primary source is a document that was created at the time of a historical event. Some examples include: the Declaration of Independence, the Magna Carta, and the Mayflower Compact. All of these are documents written by an individual who was personally involved in a historical event. They are not telling us what other people witnessed; they are telling us what they witnessed. The primary source that I want to look at is a first-hand account of the battle of Lexington and Concord during the Revolutionary War, which was written by Lieutenant John Barker.…

History is a subject based on story telling. Sometimes, it is based off letters and written documents. History is not written down for others to learn in a nonbiased opinion in the present moment. Historians must go through these documents later and decide what is biased, and what is not. They must read about an event from multiple perspectives and try and pick out what happened and what is an opinion.…

Secret Six Essay In the book George Washington’s Secret Six the authors Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger make the argument that the Culper Ring greatly influenced the outcome of the American Revolution. After reading the book, one could easily conclude that the Culper Ring was a needed organization. At the end of certain chapters, the author often makes remarks on the actions of the spies for example, “The quality of their information and the prudence they exercised in delivering it had enabled him [Washington] to both understand the plans for the British and take decisive action by not to risk an attack on New York.”…

In beginning the Historical Investigation, I chose my topic of the controversy behind the Tonkin Gulf Resolution because I had an interest in what may have influenced our defeat in the Vietnam War and I wanted to research a topic that not many people may know about. To find the information for my topic, I found a book, Vietnam: A History, which provided an overall perspective of the Vietnam war as a whole, and I found a book concentrating mainly on the controversy of the decision-making system in place, The Irony of Vietnam: the system worked by Leslie H. Gelb. Along with these sources I researched many websites on the Vietnam War and the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution itself. When deciding the best way to organize my paper, I wanted to begin…

When looking at secondary sources one must take a different view than when analyzing a primary source. There are several credentials that must be met for a truly reliable secondary source. First, who is the author, are there any authors, or was a university or nonprofit responsible for the source? Second, who published the source, is it a website, a journal or a book? Third, who is this source geared toward and what does it want its audience to know or understand?…

Poem is a piece of writing which express feelings, emotions and ideas using descriptive figurative languages. However, poems are not dependable as a secondary source and if it is written about 100 years later than when the event actually happened. Likewise, the poem cannot be trustworthy if it contains different facts from the primary source written by the person who experienced that moment and who was actually there. Furthermore, as poems use figurative languages that exaggerate things, it is not a good resource. These lead up to the poem “Paul Revere’s Ride” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, which is a secondary source written as a third person point of view.…

A pro of primary sources is that they are the most reliable way to gain information about opportunity in early America, but even still there are many challenges and downsides to using them. Primary sources are generally unbiased, but a promotional tract meant to convince people to go to America more than likely gives inaccurate information. An issue with primary sources is still distinguishing whether the information is fact or opinion. Documents such as 7-11 depict a great picture that we can assume to be honest based off of the map and records about wealth and land distribution. These are assumed to be accurate primary sources that are unbiased and give us the information we need to think about opportunity in America.…

The Last of the Mohicans can be used as a historical source is some ways, while in others it cannot. The setting of the movie and how they portrayed the British and the French fighting is accurate. The event in the movie where Colonel Duncan Munro and his British troops were attacked in an open field by the Huron was grisly and not exactly how it happened in the actual event. They also left out the reaction of Montcalm when the Huron disobeyed him, which would have been a disgrace for him. One of the things that were inconsistent with the time and place was how Mann modernized the behavior of the key characters.…
