While receiving the Sylvonus Thayer Award, General Douglas MacArthur addresses his audience with words that will most likely stay within their hearts for their life. He reminds his fellow soldiers of the words that kept them going through every battle, and stresses it by a number of literary devices, such as imagery, repetition, and pathos. He additionally employs allusion and anecdotes to provide a more in-depth speech.…
The speech I have chosen is Kate Winslet's Golden Globe acceptance speech. Winslet won the award in the ceremony of 2009 for her performance in the film "Revolutionary Road." An acceptance speech is, as the name indicates, an speech to express gratitude for an award. Its objective is to sincerely convey one's appreciation for the recognition of one's hard work. In this particular speech, an emotional and teary-eyed Winslet effectively delivers her acceptance by utilizing the correct format of this type of special occasion speeches: what the award means to her, thanking the people who helped her, and thanking the people who gave her the award.…
As Chance secured the buggy, he watched Kat spread a blanket on the ground. She sat down, pressing her blue calico dress next to her ankles. Perhaps the mild April air reminded him of home, but somehow her simple action took him a lifetime away, to another woman, to another time, to memories he’d always hold dear to his heart. Thoughts of his own wife made him wonder how Jake had ever let Kat get away.…

Lou Gehrig begins his July Fourth farewell address by avowing that he considers himself lucky despite the seemingly awful situation he was immured in. He acknowledges the fans' attention to his circumstances, but calls himself "the luckiest man on the face of the earth". He appeals to their sympathetic emotions by assuring them that in the last 17 years of his baseball career, he had always received "kindness and encouragement" from his fans. He humbly removes the focus from himself, and onto the amazing people he has been able to work with. By including the fans and teammates in his reasons why he considers himself extremely lucky, he effectively draws his audience into his speech and attaches them to himself.…

During his acceptance speech he utilizes ethos, pathos and logos to explain to the cadets and instill in them the importance of duty, honor, country during their service to the United States.…
