Kathryn Sullivan, who was born on October 3, 1951, became the first American woman to walk in space. Sullivan became an astronaut in August 1979. In October 1989 Kathryn was launched in space on STS-41-G on an eight day mission. They were launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Sullivan successfully walked in space during this mission. In total, Sullivan has been on three shuttle mission. She was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2004. She is currently working as the Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and
