Mayans, who were an ancient civilization that originated in the South American area, did not commit human sacrifices without a reason; often it had to do with astrology. Astrology has affected more than just the Incas however, even if it was not always to the extent of human sacrifice. Astrology has also affected the Mayans, and Aztecs. Astrology has lead to the creation of many interesting mythological stories, astrological calendars, and zodiac signs for each of these cultures.

The Mayan has a group of 260 days that were thought to be the most important (Astrology, 2016). This Group of days was known as the Tzolkin, depending on when you were born according to the Tzolkin would determine certain things about you're personality type and it was also used to mark when important events would occur due to the position of the celestial bodies (Astrology, 2016). With in the Tzolkin the calendar was broken up further into day signs, which would help to determine personality and what you're purpose in life would be (Astrology, 2016). There are 13-day signs that last for about 20 days each (Astrology, 2016). The day signs are further broken down into groups of nine days (Astrology, 2016). These groups of nine days are representative of the lords of the night (Astrology, 2016). Each section of the Lords of the night is named after one of the significant gods of the underworld and were said to reveal the parts of you're self that you did not want others to see (Astrology, 2016). The Mayan calendar is also broken down into 52-year cycles (Astrology, 2016). People who are born into the same year what thoughts you have similar traits in qualities as all of the others were born into that year (Astrology, 2016). This calendar had with an IT 20 day’s signs, each including 13 houses that total up to 260 days (Frederiksen, 2005). They considered the 10th and 13 houses to be good luck while the sixth House was considered to be very unlucky (Frederiksen, 2005). The house your birthday fell into was what would determine whether or not you would have a good or bad life (Frederiksen, 2005). If someone had a birthday that was within a good house they would have a very good life and when be very lucky (Frederiksen, 2005). If someone’s birthday fell into a bad house they would have a very unlucky life and would very likely wind up living in poverty (Frederiksen, 2005). According to the Aztecs they were also roughly 20 signs that could determine your personality (Dellerae, n.d.). These signs were usually named and based off of different elements of nature (Dellerae, n.d.). The Aztecs also believed that the 20-day signs worked together with another smaller set of thirteen numbers (Dellerae, n.d.). This group of thirteen numbers coexisted with the twenty day much like the way two gears rotate around one another (Dellerae, n.d.). The Aztecs would plan many events around this clock like time structure (Dellerae, n.d.). Every fifty-two years the Aztecs would select warriors to be sacrificed for a celebration (Dellerae, n.d.).
